I am a wife and mother of a precious 11 year old boy. We have lived in Serbia almost 8 years. I am to the point where I am not sure I could "re-adapt" to life in the States anymore; it's always culture-shock when I go back to visit! I do miss some of the food and find that I fill up my suitcases with the most ridiculous things; like Reeses Peanut Butter cups and vanilla extract!
My favorite things to cook
I cook with pretty much whatever is in season. Here, it is difficult to find fruits and vegetables out of season, unless you want to pay an arm and a leg for them!! I don't have a problem with that anyway, because I believe that it is healthier to cook with in-season produce. I make everything from scratch; I did even when we lived in the US. I love to prepare food from the US and serve it to our friends, neighbors, the little ladies in our local store, etc... and see their reaction to new tastes and combinations of flavors. I usually end up having to translate the recipe and give it out! I really enjoy that. Some of my best dishes are Serbian specialties-Sarma, which is made in the winter; it is stuffed pickled cabbage (sauerkraut) leaves and also, Podvarak, which is also a winter food; it is rice mixed with shredded sauerkraut and baked with turkey (or more commonly, pork). I also love in the summer to prepare stuffed peppers!
My favorite family cooking traditions
My Mom used to make the best Thanksgiving dinner. She would do it all by herself for our family of 6 (and later extended family). She would make all of the traditional things and I will never forget how our dining room table would be overflowing with prepared dishes. I can still smell that turkey baking in the oven!! She makes awesome pumpkin pie and yeast rolls!
My cooking triumphs
I would have to say making a few of the local specialties here in Serbia better than the locals (well, according to my husband!). I make an out of this world flourless chocolate cake with raspberry sauce; it's like eating a truffle! Also, whenever my husband and son say that a new dish "goes on the menu", I know I have done something right!
My cooking tragedies
Scorching lentils in my pressure cooker NUMEROUS times! You would think I'd learn!! Also, chili; can't make a good chili to save my life!!
