I'm a college student on the verge of graduate school with little time for cooking, though I try to do as many simple dishes for myself as possible to cut down on the expense and grease that come with eating out. I love to cook and bake when I have the time and money for the right ingredients. Nothing beats the smell of freshly baked bread filling a home.
My favorite things to cook
Anything that involves couscous, pierogi; crusty breads and rolls; red velvet cake, spice cookies, paczki. My family is Polish, so I often lean toward Eastern European fare, but I like to try out Thai and Indian inspired dishes, too.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Friday night home made pizza was the best. Whole wheat crust from scratch, sauce and pepperoni from our favorite Italian grocery in Toledo, fresh vegetables.
We also get great hand made kielbasa from a Polish market in Toledo. We make the other Polish food ourselves.
My mother used to make home made granola - this is one of my earliest kitchen memories ... the smell of the granola baking was the best.
My cooking triumphs
I've made some pretty impressive cheesecakes (for which I have a personal weakness) and whenever I tweak recipes I always get good feedback. My next challenge will be making brotchen for my German class.
My cooking tragedies
The tragedy wasn't in the act of baking or in the recipe, rather it was in transit. I made a beautiful red velvet cake for a friend's birthday, but the top layer slid while I was carrying it and, please allow me this, it was carnage. Absolute carnage.
