Never, Never Fail Pie Pastry

Reviewed: Oct. 8, 2008
This was really tasty. I skipped the vanilla because I was making Chicken Honey Mustard Pie from this site. It was a little harder to work with than I was expecting after reading many of the reviews. My best guess would be because I used a little margarine and a lot of butter-flavor shortening, instead of lard; lard just isn't something I keep on hand. :) Will make again though!

Chocolate Picnic Cake

Reviewed: Sep. 11, 2008
OMG this was so good. Made it as a trial run for my boyfriend's birthday next month, and we both loved it. I'm not a huge fan of cake anyway, but this was great. I skipped the chocolate chips on top because I plan on making a really good caramel frosting. Mmm! Nice and moist, I didn't change a thing. When you add the room temperature chocolate and ice water, you get little flecks of chocolate making a lovely 'sparkly looking' cake. Update: Made this again for my son's birthday. Doubled the recipe and made a two-layer. Left out the chocolate chips again (made Vanilla - Chocolate Powdered Sugar Frosting from this site), and at the birthday boy's request, added bananas; a layer between the cake layers and more along the sides and on top. I didn't even get to taste it; it was demolished!

These were so good and so simple. I added a large clove of chopped garlic for kicks. Thanks for a great recipe!

Honey Roasted Red Potatoes

I'm so glad I tried these. So simple, so yummy. I was a little short on potatoes but I added extra onion (used a whole yellow onion, cut into largish pieces) because we like onions. Turned out great!

Sweet Green Bean Bundles

Reviewed: Sep. 7, 2008
These were great. I didn't change a thing other than the type of green beans; my garden is going nuts so I used fresh raw green beans instead of canned. Everyone loved them, thanks for a great recipe!

Green Beans with Cherry Tomatoes

Reviewed: Aug. 26, 2008
This was great. The only thing I would change next time is more garlic, perhaps fresh. I am dealing with an overabundance of both beans and tomatoes right now, so this was very handy to use them up! Thanks for a great, easy recipe.

Biscuit Baking Mix

Worked like a charm! I scaled down to 2 servings and used in 'Quick Onion Bread'--very tasty, it turned out light and fluffy! Thanks for another recipe that's more convenient than the box mixes!

Whole Wheat and Honey Pizza Dough

Reviewed: Aug. 21, 2008
This was good for what it was. Chewy and fairly fluffy. I used Exquisite Pizza Sauce from this site, which added a wonderfully sweet touch, and topped with veggies and browned sausage. Easy because you don't have to let it rise forever! Thanks for a yummy healthy recipe.

Quick Onion Bread

Reviewed: Aug. 21, 2008
This was great! Wonderful onion flavor; the dried flakes plump up into chewy little yummy bits. I used an extra Tablespoon of melted butter on top. For the baking mix I used 'Biscuit Baking Mix' from this site, scaled to 2 servings. Highly recommended!

Refried Beans Without the Refry

Reviewed: Aug. 15, 2008
These were great. Based on others reviews I only used about 3 teaspoons of salt. Also I added the entire jalapeno, which added just enough spice to taste but not so much that I, as a true Minnesotan, couldn't eat it. And as a bonus, the crockpot was easier to clean than I expected! Thanks for a wonderful submission.

Exquisite Pizza Sauce

Reviewed: Aug. 10, 2008
This stuff was awesome. Excellent flavor, no cooking involved, easy ingredients. I know I did some changes to the seasonings because I don't like spicy. Didn't use much chili powder and no flakes, just cumin instead. Also, I don't measure my chopped garlic, but I used two small cloves because really, on pizza, you can never have enough minced garlic. Yummy, thanks for this!

Just like I remember Mom's. I added fresh parsley & used fresh dill instead of dried. Great way to use up all my cukes. Thanks for a great submission!

Old-Fashioned Onion Soup

Reviewed: Aug. 5, 2008
I love love love having dinner ready for me. My boyfriend said this was the best onion soup recipe I've made yet. I used Vidalia onions and cut the recipe in half. The only change I made was to use a really good beef broth instead of chicken. The soup was good as is, but of course I couldn't resist adding another slice of bread topped with cheese, baked on top. Excellent comfort food on what turned out to be a very difficult day for us both. Thanks for the submission.

Italian Bread Bowls

Reviewed: Aug. 4, 2008
Well, I must be doing it wrong. Flavor was excellent, but my second rise would not get much higher. I did the pan of boiling water in the oven method, but after an hour they weren't going to get any bigger. I baked them up anyway, they look and taste fine. I will try the recipe again and see if I have any better luck (I'm still not always good with yeast!). UPDATE: Yep, I tried the recipe again, followed it exactly, got exactly the same thing. Little round pita breads :(

Staci's Strata

This was great. Followed mostly as written; I subbed mushrooms for the sausage and I cut the recipe in half (cooked it in a square 8-inch pan). Not too eggy tasting, which my boyfriend prefers. Yum!

Crazy Crust Pizza Dough

Reviewed: Aug. 2, 2008
Good for when you want a thin crust and are in a hurry. I made exactly as stated, making a breakfast pizza with sausage, mushrooms, onions, bell pepper, cheese and gravy. I put all the veggies on the raw dough, threw it in the oven for 25 minutes, then topped with sausage, gravy and cheese and cooked for another 10 minutes. Pretty good! Oh and I used bread flour instead of all-purpose.

Crispy Sweet Onion Rings

Reviewed: Jul. 29, 2008
The flavor was great, but I, like other reviewers, could not get the crumb coating to stick to the egg/onion. I finally just dumped a pile of crumbs over the layer of onion rings and baked that way.

Mom's Chocolate Chip Cookies

Reviewed: Jul. 28, 2008
These turned out great. I didn't quite have enough semi sweet chips so mixed in a little bit of milk chocolate. I also like to make them a bit bigger. They are soft and chewy the next day, which is what I was looking for, so thanks!

Cantonese Dinner

Reviewed: Jul. 28, 2008
I made this for my boyfriend one night because I wasn't going to be home until late. He said it was awesome! I was hoping to try the leftovers but they were gone before I could! I used boneless ribs, cut into chunks, browned with a mix of veggie and sesame oils. I left out the mushrooms, so it was pretty much just pork and onions. According to my man it was great, so, five stars! Thanks for a great recipe! Update; made this again for some friends and it turned out well. The only change I made was to use fresh mushrooms instead of canned; I thought the dish was a bit salty, but otherwise the flavor was great.
