Tarte a L'oignon (French Onion Pie)

Reviewed: May 20, 2009
This is amazing. It's a little much for a weekday dinner but I can't wait to make it for friends! I used a HUGE Vidalia onion and 3 little yellow onions, and next time it will be all Vidalias; they add the best flavor. I loved the addition of the nutmeg, it really gives it a special something. Thanks for a super recipe!

Ham and Swiss Braid

Reviewed: May 19, 2009
This is so yummy! I made one change; the store was out of ham so I tried this with roast beef and sliced swiss. Excellent! The pickles add a nice bite. I love the dijon in the dough also. I had to re-read the braiding instructions a few times since I have never made anything like this before, but once the light dawned it was so easy :) I can't wait to try this with ham, thanks for a wonderful recipe that impressed my picky boyfriend! UPDATE: Made this with ham for DBF's family; they loved it! They have a convection oven, I set it for 370 and cooked about 25 minutes. Excellent!

Oatmeal Sandwich Cremes

Reviewed: May 18, 2009
Excellent! Although some found the filling too sweet. The cookie alone is really tasty, nice cinnamon flavor. I had more filling per cookie than I thought I would, so go ahead and lay it on thick or else find somewhere else to use the extra. Followed the recipe to a T and I love them! Thanks for a good one--

Spicy Basil Chicken

Reviewed: Apr. 30, 2009
My boyfriend loved it, said it was one of the best dinners I ever made :) The only thing I didn't have was chili oil, so I added crushed red pepper to the olive oil I browned the garlic and peppers in. Served over rice noodles. I loved the fresh basil flavor and did not find it too salty, although I did not add salt and pepper. I have been commanded to make this one again, thanks for a great recipe! UPDATE: Made this again with sweet Vidalia onions and portobello mushrooms...superb!

Chewy Chocolate Chip Granola Bars

Reviewed: Apr. 29, 2009
Addicting! I did not have quite enough peanut butter, so I topped off the measuring cup with (about a tablespoon) honey. The only other sub I made was to do walnuts instead of marshmallows. They are a little crumbly so next time I will try pushing them into the pan a little harder, to make them more compact and something you can eat on the go. I did cut the recipe in half and cooked in my 8x8 pan for exactly 25 minutes. Thanks for the recipe!

Chicken Breasts with Balsamic Vinegar and Garlic

Reviewed: Apr. 28, 2009
Extremely yummy. I only used 3 chicken breasts since mine were huge; otherwise followed all directions. The flour dredging didn't seem to add anything, as most of the coating came off while cooking even though I tried to mess with the chicken as little as possible. Seemed like a lot of garlic but it was not overpowering at all; directions didn't say so I just slivered each clove into 4 pieces. I did sprinkle a tiny bit of flour into the sauce at the end to thicken it a bit. This turned out great and I will make it again!

Sparkling Grapefruit Pie

Reviewed: Apr. 22, 2009
Very nice, fresh flavor. I made one major change; I used lime jello, which made it look like a Halloween project but tasted awesome! Did not have whipped cream to serve with it, but it made a nice light end to a dinner of brats and beer. Thanks for an interesting, yummy recipe!

Citrus-Honey Green Tea

Reviewed: Apr. 22, 2009
Very good. Tart but good. I did double the honey because I like a sweet tea (still came out a bit tangy!). Also I put some looseleaf green tea in my tea ball along with some grated lemon zest, since that's all I had, and steeped that together before adding all the other ingredients. Good way to get your vitamin C, that's for sure!

Spinach Tomato Tortellini

Reviewed: Apr. 20, 2009
Nummy! Schwan's makes a good 6-cheese tortellini and I'm always looking for a new way to make it. This recipe is just the right combination of rich and fresh! I can't wait until my garden is going and I will have fresh basil to add; the dried basil just doesn't do as much for this dish. I did have some fresh parsley this time around, and it added a nice punch. Thanks for a great recipe!

Sue's Two-Chocolate Chip Cookies

Pretty easy (my boyfriend made these all by himself), one of the sweetest chocolate chip cookie recipes I have ever tasted! He didn't want the white chocolate chips so subbed all semi-sweet, and they were pretty rich.

Amish White Bread

Reviewed: Apr. 19, 2009
Easiest, yummiest yeast bread ever! I used one loaf to make Bierrocks and cooked the other as directed. Followed all directions exactly, and the bread came out perfect (second rise took a little longer than stated). Slightly dense and just a little sweet; I will make this again to go with some creamy spinach dip. Mmm my mouth is watering!

Bierocks (German Meat Turnovers)

Reviewed: Apr. 19, 2009
Great stuff! I did some substituting on the filling; I had some leftover roast, so used that instead of ground beef, and I had no cabbage. I did add some canned mushrooms and some fresh baby spinach. Every ten minutes I brushed them with melted butter, which made them soft and flavorful. For dough I used half a recipe of 'Amish White Bread' from this site, which is a slightly dense, sweet bread. Turned out wonderful, thanks for a great recipe!

Honey Glazed Ham

Reviewed: Apr. 12, 2009
Very tasty, with simple ingredients. I did cut the glaze ingredients in half, and since I didn't use a deep enough pan I had to dump some halfway through the cooking time because it was starting to overflow. Wonderful flavor though, thanks for a great recipe!

Old Fashioned Sugar Cookies II

Reviewed: Apr. 11, 2009
One of the best tasting sugar cookies I have tried; must be the cream :) Mine did not brown after about 15 minutes in the oven, and that pan was pretty crispy (couldn't get them off the pan without breaking birdy legs and umbrella handles), so I set my timer for 10 minutes and they were perfect. Didn't brown but did puff up really nicely, I don't like my sugar cookies too thin and crispy and these are the perfect combo of easy to travel but not rock hard. I had help from my 5-year old rolling and cutting, and we re-rolled enough times that by the last rolling there was quite a bit of extra flour in there! Still tender and good though. I did skip the icing this time because I had promised we could make paintbrush cookies; before baking, paint cookies with a mixture of an egg yolk, dash of water, and food coloring. Lots of fun but somewhat time consuming, good for rainy days! Then sprinkle with a little sugar and bake as usual. Next time I would like to try the icing though. I've never had a cookie recipe ask me to cut in the butter, so the texture seemed really weird; I had to work it a bit with my hands and then it rolled out smooth and perfect, easy to work with. Thanks for a great recipe!

Great, juicy burger! I have a tendency to overmix my burgers but these stuck together very well and had a great flavor. I didn't have French dressing so I used Western instead. Topped with some home made onion rings and Sweet Baby Ray's BBQ sauce, awesome :)

Old Fashioned Onion Rings

Reviewed: Apr. 11, 2009
Crunchy and super tasty (I even forgot to put seasoned salt on them, they were just that good!)...a huge downside is how long these take to make. It's not even worth the effort to make more than 3 servings. I was not planning on feeding more than my boyfriend and self, and ended up having 3 more adults and a 5-year-old to feed as well, and it took us an hour to make all these. Dipping each ring 3 times is pretty time consuming! I admit it was worth it for the flavor and exquisite crunch, but I'll never make this for so many people again!

Paraplegic

Reviewed: Apr. 11, 2009
Went down very, very smooth! I thought it was like drinking chocolate milk with a shot of root beer, which sounds weird but is very good. I measured everything exactly, my only sub was to use a different whiskey (cheap Kentucky bourbon), which is what I enjoy in my usual cocktail of choice. Loved it, thanks for a great recipe!

Mandarin Chicken Roll-Ups

Reviewed: Apr. 9, 2009
This is extremely yummy! I got the o'k from picky boyfriend and from my 5-year-old to make these again when we are picnicking :) I played with the amounts, using only 3 chicken breasts to make 5 wraps; also I only had fat-free cream cheese. But there is so much flavor to this wrap; every bite is something different and good! Thanks for a great recipe.
