About this Cook
I've recently retired but my wife still works so I try to have dinner ready for her when she comes home from work. I've found that I enjoy cooking for her.
My favorite things to cook
I seldom fix the same thing twice since there are so many recipes to make. But I do have a few favorites that I've made several times because they taste so good. Two of my favorites are the Apricot Danish Coffee Cake and Rorys Corn Bread. Both are great treats.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My grandmother used to make black eyed peas on New's Years day, and I have continuted her tradition.
My cooking triumphs
When I have a really good meal at a fancy resturant, I used to say, "I be back for more of that". Now I say, "I can make that!"
My cooking tragedies
I love hot dogs and one of the first recipes I made was the "Pigs in a blanket" from this site. Well.... When I made this recipe I followed the directions perfectly except I put them in the MICROWAVE OVEN for fifteen minutes instead of the regular oven!!! I thought they looked a little over done when I took them out of the oven... I started to pick one of them up but the melted cheese had glued it to the plate. After prying it off the plate I noticed that the "Pig" was light as a feather (there was absolutely NO moisture left in the bread or the frankfurter). It was dry as a cork. I attempted to take a bite and found that although it was light as a feather, it was also hard as a rock!! I sat looking at the hot dogs trying to figure what went wrong!! Only then did I realize that I should have put them in the regular oven. I gave one to Molly, my dog, and she refused to eat it!!

My Mother's Mac and Cheese
It was a little too dry for my taste... There are other mac and cheese recipes that I've tried that I like better.

Chili Dog Casserole I
I made no changes to the recipe and I loved it. If you don't give this one five stars, you don't love hot dogs.

Fried Green Tomatoes
If you grow your own tomatoes, October is the time of year to bring in all those green tomatoes that aren't going to have time to ripen before the frost arrives. I had two handfuls of little green one plus a few that were good size. However I used a less butter and instead of the crackers, I used corn meal because that the way my grandmother made them. I'm sure the crackers would be good also. For people that have never had fried green tomatoes, the taste is unique and the first time you have them you may wonder what all the fuss is about... I'm here to tell you that fried green tomatoes are one of my very favorite treats. I've served them with a meal and also as an appetizer. I give this recipe a solid five star rating. This is the way us country folks fix our fried green tomatoes!!
