About this Cook
I make my living as a graduate student in cell biology, but I decorate cakes on the side. I am a vegetarian, but I still cook meat for my carnivorous husband :o) We live in Michigan with our lab/shepherd mix Penny, who gladly samples all of my cooking!
My favorite things to cook
I love to decorate cakes and even do wedding cakes as a hobby. I also love to make soup, and enjoy finding ways to make my favorite soup recipes vegetarian - I make a great chicken and dumplings stew without the chicken!
My cooking triumphs
Once I had to make a wedding cake for a friend the day after returning from a 2-week vacation in Turkey. I made the cake before we left and put it in the freezer, but our flight was cancelled and we couldn't get back. I made several frantic phone calls, and found someone to take the cake out of the freezer for me. I made it home 6 hours before the wedding, but found that as the cake defrosted the frosting and fondant was sliding off and onto the table. Somehow I was able to fix everything and hide the "boo boos" with ribbon and flowers, and the cake was absolutely gorgeous! The bride was thrilled and no one knew that it was almost a complete disaster!

Chocolate Chip Bars
These were great! I did add 1/4 cup creamy peanut butter and cook at 50% for 11 minutes as suggested by other reviewers. I also made this in a round pan to avoid overdone corners. This recipe is a keeper!

Oklahoma Cheese Grits
I have made this recipe several times, and it always gets rave reviews! I do make the following changes: reduce butter to 1/4 cup, and use 2 cups shredded cheddar or cobly-jack cheese in place of the processed cheese.

Grilled Radishes
I don't particularly care for radishes, but we received a bunch on our produce delivery and I was looking for a way to use them. I never would have thought to cook a radish, but these were excellent! They have a very mild taste, kind of a cross between a turnip and a potato, but don't have the mealy texture of a potato. This will become a regular!
