Dip For The Stars

Reviewed: Jan. 4, 2009
This was a beautiful presentation, but only the adults cared for it. I took it to a family gathering with 18 people, 8 of which were adults, and came home with most of it. I wish I could say we loved it after all the reviews, but unfortunately, we didn't. Thanks for the post!

Black Bean And Corn Salad II

Just okay but probably my fault...the avocados were a little firm, and the tomatoes kinda tasteless. Great idea but not many guests tried it, and nobody went back for seconds.

Deviled Eggs

Reviewed: Jan. 1, 2009
Wasn't sure about adding sugar, and we had friends over last night who didn't try them for a long time, but once they did, the plate was cleared! This one's a keeper. Last time I tried deviled eggs, it was a failure; too runny and too much mayo, which I tried to correct with some caesar dressing, then added sweet pickles, and the things ran so badly they were an embarrassing mess. THESE deviled eggs will stay in my keepers, although next time I'll try white balsamic vinegar for a more intense flafor; the plain brown stuff would turn the yolks grey, I'm afraid.

Terrific Turkey Chili

Reviewed: Dec. 16, 2008
Everyone loved this except the 8yo...will save and hopefully his tastes will change! Added 1 can (amount) of frozen corn, drained black beans, drained red kidney beans, and sliced zucchini into 6ths so the pieces were more the size of the beans. Hubby had seconds....this was great for a cold, foggy day! Update: took to a teachers' luncheon and I made labels with the name of the recipe and the website link. All 30 labels were taken! Everyone loved this! I made a pot of spicy for the teachers, with a heaping tbsp of red pepper flakes. GREAT on a cool day!

Russian Mushroom and Potato Soup

5 stars from hubby & kids (10 & 8); made with Italian seasonings in place of dill, since I was out, and halved the recipe. It's a keeper!

Chocolate Trifle

Reviewed: Dec. 8, 2008
Per other reviewers, I omitted the sweetened condensed milk and used regular milk in it's place. I added 2 teaspoons instant coffee granules to the chocolate pudding. Also divided mixture into thirds for pretty layers. To the top layer of cool whip, I added 1/2 cup toffee bits, chocolate sprinkles, and red and green colored sugar for a festive look for a recent girl's night out. It was a hit, and the kids got to eat the leftovers...will keep for a special dessert. Thanks for the post!

Oven Baked BBQ Ribs

Reviewed: Dec. 1, 2008
I can't give this 5 stars because all I did was use a commercial brand bbq sauce to coat the ribs and baste with. But I did use the oven temp and the cooking time! I started out with the ribs covered, but after 30 mins when I went to baste them, they were so goopy I left the foil off the rest of the time. They were fork-tender and a hit with the family. Thanks for the basic recipe!

Shrimpcargot

Reviewed: Nov. 28, 2008
These were highly recommended by many on the AR recipe exchange, but I had a little trouble with the texture. I'm not normally texturally-challenged, but I agree with another reviewer that they'd be better if the shrimp was chopped. Thanks for the post.

Hot Toddy

Didn't have whiskey so used vanilla rum and a hit of orange liqueur, on top of a constant comment green tea bag. Honestly I've been blowing my nose all day so after a few sips, not feeling tipsy, but the heat is helping to clear stuff out. I'm sure I'll sleep well tonight! thanks for the post

Basic Baked Spaghetti

Reviewed: Nov. 19, 2008
I used a 26-oz jar of sauce, along with a 16oz can I had in the pantry. Per another reviewer, I browned some mild Italian sausage and used it, adding plenty of garlic powder plus two cloves, sliced. I did stir the cooked noodles into the sauce/meat/cheese mixture. I added 4oz can of drained, sliced black olives on top, then covered with foil when cooking so it wouldn't brown and get hard, like others had noted. The foil worked like a charm, and this made a HUGE 9x13 pan full. Great potluck dish, and fed our family of 4 for 3 meals. Will add to my keeper-file; thanks for the post!

Pumpkin Pancakes

Reviewed: Nov. 19, 2008
These were great to make and freeze, for a quick breakfast; however, I believe there is twice the amount of baking powder needed. These were so thick, even when I spread them out very thin, they rose and grew thicker. I didn't make the syrup and kids (10&8) loved them. They really do stick to your ribs, and I'll keep them in my file to make again, next time reducing the amount of baking powder. I hope halving the amount won't compromise the integrity of such a thick batter. Thanks for the post.

Funky Frito Fruckies

Kids loved these, but after a couple of days in a sealed container, they became gooey. Probably won't make again, and it's rare for me to say that! My son loves fritos and he enjoyed this candy, but it's not really a keeper. Thanks for the post, I'm always up for trying something new.

Famous Pork Chops

Reviewed: Nov. 2, 2008
Kids (10 & 8) and hubby loved them. For the crumbs, I used a sleeve of Wheat Ritz plus garlic salt and threw in 1/4 cup wheat germ and 2 tbsp flaxseed for some sneaky vitamins/fiber. I had a large assorted pack (8 chops) of bone-in, thin cut chops, and used 2 glass dishes to bake them in. Cooked once for two dinners, love the convenience. This one's a keeper; thanks for the post!
