About this Cook
Mother of 3, database programmer but currently not working, cooking seems to be one of my favorite things to do. Luckily my husband is a really good sport about doing dishes . ..
My favorite things to cook
The biggest challenge is finding foods that we all like, because we are all picky eaters. Plus I am currently avoiding wheat and milk . . . so that makes things challenging.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My mother had a degree in nutrition and a degree in food chemistry, had worked in restaraunts, and wrote several cookbooks when I was young. We grew up with a wide variety of gourmet foods - but i'd never even heard of grits or biscuits and gravy until I was in my 20s.
My cooking triumphs
Some of the cheesecakes I've made for my daughters b-days, wow!
My cooking tragedies
Best ever . . . I was making tomato soup and I was very tired and distracted. I mixed together the milk and cornstarch, wondering why it didnt seem as stiff as usual . .. but i poured it in to the soup anyways . . . and we had volcano tomato soup!!

Souvlaki
I first tried this recipe when I was looking for something to do with a pork loin - i grew up jewish and we never cooked pork! I tried this for something different and my husband devoured it like i'd never seen . . . he finally stopped eating long enough to tell me that he used to go to a little hole-in-the-wall place in canada, almost weekly, just to order their souvlaki, and this tasted EXACTLY like it! For a long time, my youngest got excited whenever he saw the 'meat on a stick', and actually called it 'yummy meat'. Due to allergies, I have reworked this to use chicken and leave out the garlic, and we still love it - thanks! (but we do sub half the soy w more lemon, to reduce the salt)

Oven-Fried Pork Chops
When I picked up the stuffing mix, there were off-brand mixes in bags, and they had a small-crumb and a large-crumb variety - i just used the small crumb, and it was fine. However, my kids did NOT like the flavor at all. They prefer my usual grilled pork chops.

Creamy Parsnip With Ginger Soup
Awesome! Due to food issues and what was on hand, of course i altered a bit. I subbed 2 leeks for the onion, and added with the garlic (which i increased some). I grated in some frozen fresh ginger, and also used the powdered ginger. I omitted the cardomam and used potato milk instead of the cream. Oh, I also put in the whole box of broth, which is closer to 4 cups than 3. My family loved the soup! Well, it was too sweet for my husband, but my teen daughter had 2 bowls of this and no chicken, and my 11 yo boy ate his whole bowl. (Ok, he actually dipped some of his french fries in it lol)
