I'm a recent college graduate and got married just before my last year of college, so I only really started cooking once I got married. Before that, meals consisted of cereal, yogurt, and canned kidney beans. But now I have the time (and a little more incentive now that I'm cooking for two) to learn to cook with balance and variety.
My favorite things to cook
I like to cook anything that is as close to a complete meal in itself as you can get: hearty soups, balanced casseroles, or anything that will go over rice. And anything that will freeze well. I have been working on finding recipes that I can use to rotate my emergency food storage supply...that pretty much means dried beans, wheat, rice, or pasta with other stuff that is canned. I also like to try out new cookie recipes.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Cinnamon rolls with breakfast on Christmas morning, family Sunday dinners to celebrate birthdays, and barbecues for summer holidays.
My cooking triumphs
Making my very first Thanksgiving dinner with no help from my mom! My husband and I were thousands of miles from home, so we invited several single students over and we made Thanksgiving dinner for them. The turkey and stuffing were magnificent!
My cooking tragedies
I tried to make a steak dinner for my husband to celebrate a special occasion. I had never made steak before and didn't know that if I wanted to cook it in the broiler I had to sear it first. It was so tough that it didn't matter how long you chewed it, it just never softened up!
