About this Cook
I have a wonderful husband of 40 yrs and 2 lovely daughters. We've homeschooled since 1986 and are still home educating our 15 yr old. I love to cook and I teach classes to young married women in our Church. Examples of the classes are canning, freezing, baking whole wheat bread. We have a ball together and enjoy eating the things we all make together. I love having our home school group get together at our country home each october. We do outdoor cooking over an open fire, crafts and skills---any skill that is at least 50 years old. This past Oct we had 35 kids. Some of the children taught us to square dance. We made eggs noodles from scratch, learned the history and types of rolling pins. Over the past years we have had about 90 skills demonstrated and many of them were hands-on and great fun. This year the highlight of the lunch was a gingerbread recipe that I discovered at Allrecipes.com!!
My favorite things to cook
Anything freshly gathered. New recipes. Strange combinations. Traditional favorites. Using hertiage vegetables while teaching open hearth cooking at our county's farm museum.(The museum has a lovely hertiage garden.)
My favorite family cooking traditions
Bread Pudding on Christmas morning. Large crowd on Thanksgiving with many cook ahead recipes so I can enjoy the friendship and fun and thanksgiving.
My cooking tragedies
When I was about 10 yrs old I enthusiasically made Molasses Cookies. The batter was so runny and that I had to pour it onto the sided cookie sheet. They smelled wonder while baking and I was excited to taste this first "all alone" kitchen experience. The recipe called for 2 T. vinegar and a cup of molasses....you guessed it! I mixed up the amounts. A full cup of vinegar does made a cookie batter slightly runny!! My sisters and I ate about 1/4 of the batch anyway!

Blackberry Cobbler
This cobbler had a superb flavor and consistency. My only negative comment is that it is nearly impossible to cut into 1/4" slices as directed. How can you roll out the dough, spread large berries over that, roll up and then slice 1/4". The berries I had were very large (quarter-size) and while attempting to slice the rolled log the berries would drop out. I ended up cutting them about 3/4" then gently placing them into the melted butter pan. As I said, this tasted very very good, just that it was not as easily done as other reviews said it was. I followed directions to the "tee".

Simple Whole Wheat Bread
Rises well, great flavor and texture. Three large loaves of w.w. bread would cost $10-12 at the market. These three great fresh preservative-free loaves cost about about $3 total. In these economic times we might all learn to be more thrifty by making our own tasty bread. This recipe is the perfect place to begin. Easy and yummy. My family loved it. Thanks Nita.

Yellow Cake Made from Scratch
I made this cake exactly as directed. I substitued 1/2 of the shortening with 1/2 butter as the recipe state could be done. We liked the flavor of this scratch cake but according to all of my family it was a tad dry and the crumb was too large. We actually baked this two minutes under the stated time. When cutting the cake there were crumbs all over the serving plate. This made a poor presentation. Based on our experience we could only rate this cake a 3.
