I come from a family where both my parents did a lot of cooking. I think I take more after my father in that I enjoy and am fairly good at the cooking part. Cleaning up afterwards, though, not so much.
My favorite things to cook
Anything vegetarian. Especially Ethiopian, Indian, Mexican, and Eastern European. I don't really bake much at all, but I would love to get into it. Every time I attempt to bake, it just comes out terrible. I'll keep practicing, though.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My grandparents moved to the United States from Ukraine in the late 40's. My grandmother still makes traditional Ukranian food, though she actually learned most of the recipes in the US from other Ukrainian immigrants. We have a large vegetarian dinner (with fish) every Christmas Eve with the traditional Ukrainian dishes. They're fantastic. It's definitely my favorite meal of the year!
My cooking triumphs
Making pyrogy with my Baba and continuing the family tradition. Step by step she went over the process with my aunt, my sisters and I. While we were all pleased with the results my Baba said, "It's good for your first time." Granted, they looked a little funny, but I was still happy with the way they tasted and that's what matters most!
My cooking tragedies
Making borscht and realizing the difference between garlic cloves and garlic powder.
