Halloween Spirit, Lost and Found

Up until few days ago, my Halloween mojo was missing in action and it took a crisis to bring it back. Here's what happened. I was gearing up to make my annual Halloween gingerbread house, but deep inside I just wasn't feeling the love. I'd done it the same way for so many years that my passion had cooled. I was bored. Oh sure, I changed up the details--toasted coconut instead of candy corn on the roof? Woohoo! But essentially I was building the same house over and over again.

Why? Because I was taking the easy way by using a kit with pre-baked pieces. I told myself that it saved time. That the baking part wasn't important. That the decorating was the thing.

Truth is, I was living a lie. Truth is, I was too scared to bake my own gingerbread. Truth is, I knew--as surely as I know how badly I spell without spellchecker--that I would fail miserably at baking.

But when it came time to buy the kit for this year's house, I couldn't find one. I drove to five stores in one afternoon. Nothing. The days ticked by and Halloween grew closer and I kep searching. I got desperate. Desperate enough to bake.

And that's how it happened. Forced out of my pre-baked gingerbread comfort zone, I had to face my fear and just do it. Okay, so I made a big mess and totally screwed up early and often. But making the house from scratch ended up putting me in a more creative place than I've been for a good long while.

Now it's your turn for true confessions. What stokes your creative fire? What's been holding you back? Or you could just say hi. Either way, thanks for the visit and have a Happy Halloween!

haha! Very cute! Such a cute idea, I had never thought of a spooky gingerbread house for Halloween. I am the epitome of "un-creative", but I love to see what other peoples do. Have a Happy day too!

We LOVE your Halloween house! How fun. We've always done Christmas houses since my son was in kindergarten but nothing that oomplex. Lack of time is my excuse........

About Me
Two working adults and a kid in school. Someone has to cook and that someone is usually me. *sigh*
My favorite things to cook
Whatever makes my family smile while they're eating.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I cook, they clean up after me. It's the kind of tradition I can fully embrace.
My cooking triumphs
No one has asked me to stop yet.
My cooking tragedies
When I was 13, I made pecan rolls for my family. The recipe called for 8 refrigerator biscuits but the package held 10. My mom asked me what I did with the other 2. Judging from the look on her face, "I threw them away" wasn't the right answer.
