Milk N Honey Bread

Reviewed: Sep. 26, 2009
Not too bad. I bake bread all the time, so I guess I'm jaded, but this doesn't taste much like a yeast bread to me. It does taste like a quick bread in my opinion, but don't let that stop you. It reminds me a little of the texture of cornbread, but it's sweet and doesn't taste like corn (I know I'm stating the obvious but I'm tired and cant' come up with a better explanation). It's not too bad and used up some of our milk and honey. I didn't bake at 325--experience tells me that doesn't work in my oven. I baked at 350 for an hour and it worked perfectly. You'll have to know what works best in your oven as they all are different. Thanks for the recipe!

Marinated Ham Steaks

Not bad. I didn't taste the marinade much, but what I did taste was pretty good. I like how quick it was to prepare after being in the marinade. Thanks for the recipe!

Fruit Leather

Reviewed: Sep. 21, 2009
Okay, this was fun in terms of trying something completely new. It also reminds me of my mom, as she used to dry fruits and make fruit leather when I was little. However, I experienced a few difficulties with this recipe. I don't have a blender but I'm inclined to agree that a blender isn't going to puree apples and pears adequately. Before my blender broke, I couldn't even make hummus well bc it didn't puree. I used the food processor and it pureed in a minute. I just couldn't put plastic wrap in the oven, so I used parchment paper instead, which worked just as well. I really wasn't sure how thick to put the puree on the pan and ended up with about 1/2 inch thickness. My oven also does not go to 150 degrees--only to 170, which is what I had it on for hours. Even at 7-8 hours, the fruit was just as applesauce-y as when I started. So I turned the oven to 200 degrees and left it on overnight. Woke up this morning and voila! Fruit leather! I only used half the sugar and it's plenty sweet and tastes good. It does, however, take a very long time. Next time I'll use my dehydrator for this instead, as I don't like having the oven on so long. Still, it's a fun recipe and with adjustments it would be great. Thanks for the recipe!

Italian Style Sausage

Reviewed: Sep. 20, 2009
I halved the recipe and wish I hadn't--I didn't taste as much of the sausage flavor as I would've liked. I'm a bit of a spice fiend, though, so I don't think that is a reflection on the recipe. For me, I'd have preferred it being doubled. Bf didn't notice a thing, though, so it must be me. I added in fennel seeds along with the anise since I love fennel flavor. I'll definitely come back to this and flavor with more anise and fennel next time. thanks for the recipe!

Rustic Sausage Pasta

Reviewed: Sep. 20, 2009
This is excellent stuff. Very easy, too, and not too time consuming. I used a frozen vegetable blend that had squash, zucchini, and mushrooms but not peppers. That's okay though--we didn't miss the peppers at all. I did add another can of diced tomatoes and I'm glad I did. Next time, however, I'd drain one of the cans of tomatoes--it ended up a bit watery. Still, this has great flavor and is a wonderful one dish meal. I flavored the sausage by using the Italian Style Sausage recipe from AR and then I used cheese tortellini, not rotini pasta. It turned out wonderfully. I got a little carried away with using up items from my freezer and ended up with half the sauce not needed to cover the pasta. However, no big deal. We'll definitely eat more of this this week! I'm not a leftover fan, but I'd eat this again right away. Thanks for the recipe!

Light Wheat Rolls

Reviewed: Sep. 19, 2009
Very nice--didn't change a thing ingredient wise. I halved the recipe and made the dough in the bread machine. Although I was intrigued by the swirls, I didnt make them bc I wanted sandwich rolls. I made 8 rolls out of the halved recipe, which gave me some good sized rolls for meatball sandwiches. I baked for about 25 minutes and they were perfect. Bf didn't seem to notice they had ww flour, which is always a plus. Thanks for the recipe!

Peach Muffins

Reviewed: Sep. 19, 2009
This batter was very thick, even after I added the peaches. It was pretty dense and a tad too sweet for me--I'd say that a little more liquid and some more peaches would do it for me. I made it into a bread--the recipe submitter's note that it makes 2 loaves is a bit misleading, as I halved the recipe and ended up with a very small loaf. I have smaller bread pans, as well, and my breads tend to be taller as a result. I'd think this could easily make a regular sized quick bread. Thanks for the recipe!

Meat Pie (Tourtiere)

Reviewed: Sep. 15, 2009
Very good. I used already cooked and shredded pork and still cooked as directed. I added the potato in near the end as I used mashed potatoes. It smelled so good while simmering with the spices, but I didn't taste much of the spices after baking. I didn't top with a crust as I ran out of it, so just folded the edges over. It still worked, just didn't look as pretty as it could have. This is relatively easy and it turns out well; just would like to taste the spices more. Thanks for the recipe!

Arizona Carnitas With Green Chiles

Reviewed: Sep. 13, 2009
Pretty good. Bf and I both liked it; bf ate seconds. I used already shredded and cooked pork in this recipe bc that's what I had. Very easy and although it's not quick, it's a nice meal. I've never had carnitas before (at least I don't think I have) and I was pleased. Thanks for the recipe.

Chili-Stuffed Baked Potatoes

Reviewed: Sep. 11, 2009
Quick and easy. Yes, it could probably benefit from some veggies like peppers or whatnot, but for a quick, easy dinner, it's great. I subbed already cooked pulled pork for the ground beef, which made it even faster. This recipe modifies well and it's tasty. Thanks for the recipe!

Chocolate Chip Banana Bread I

Reviewed: Sep. 11, 2009
Definitely more like a cake than a traditional banana bread in my opinion. I read the reviews before making it and cut out a 1/2 cup of the sugar and a 1/2 cup of the chocolate chips. It was still sweet as a result but not overpowering, and bf loved it. He didn't notice that it wasn't more sweet, and I liked the balance. I used my bundt pan and it took about 1 hour and 5-10 minutes to bake. It did require the toothpick test, but every oven is different and mine tends to need longer. Thanks for the recipe!

Thai Peanut Butter Sauce

Reviewed: Sep. 3, 2009
I made this because I needed peanut sauce for the Thai Lettuce Wraps with Satay Pork Strips (recipe on here). Although I like Thai food, I don't eat it a lot (we don't go out much and I don't have many recipes for it), so I don't know if it's authentic or different from other sauces. It's good, though, and worked well in the recipe. I had everything except the sherry and I subbed apple cider vinegar for it. Thanks for the recipe!

Thai Lettuce Wraps with Satay Pork Strips

Reviewed: Sep. 3, 2009
Very good, thank you. I love recipes where everything can be made ahead of time and then assembled just before eating. Makes dinner a snap! I put the pork in the marinade last night before going to bed and grilled the pork chops at lunch time while I cut up the carrot and cucumber. Although I didn't have any peanut sauce, I used the Thai Peanut Butter Sauce recipe from here and made 1 serving, which was 1/4 cup exactly. Bf thought the sauce was a bit weird; not sure why but he did say he liked it. We like lettuce wraps in this house and this was a twist on them that we really enjoyed. I didn't have the noodles or the cilantro so just left them out. Since we did like these so much the next time I make them I'll try to get the noodles and see if we like them any better. Thanks for the recipe!

Feta Cheese Turkey Burgers

Reviewed: Sep. 2, 2009
Very nice turkey burgers. Bf liked them, although I didn't put olives in his burger. I put the olives in mine and mine fell apart--I think it's bc I didn't chop the olives. We'll make again, but I think next time I'll mix everything in the food processor (for me anyway--with the olives!) so the olives are more chopped. I belive that will help with the crumbling--it really only was falling apart where the bigger pieces of olives were. I really like the flavor and bf was happy with it too. thanks for the recipe!

Sausage and Sun-Dried Tomato Quiche

Reviewed: Sep. 1, 2009
This is excellent. I love it! Bf liked it very much too. I used bacon as I didn't have sausage, but I'm sure it would be just as good with sausage. To make things easier on myself, I just chopped the sun dried tomatoes in the food processor with the rest of the ingredients that needed mixed with it. Takes a few pulses and voila! mixed together and chopped sun dried tomatoes all at the same time. I used the jarred sun dried tomatoes in oil for this recipe as it didn't say one way or the other. Worked perfectly. At the written time and temp it got pretty dark; I probably should've checked on it, but it really didn't affect the taste at all. Still very wonderful. Thanks for the recipe! We will make it again.

Soft Oat Rolls

Reviewed: Aug. 30, 2009
Good rolls. I'm not an expert on pan rolls, however, so they didn't work as well as they should've for me. Completely my fault . . .I just made into regular rolls and stuck in a pan. Apparently that doesn't work quite so well. ;o) tasted good, but I had to bake much longer than stated bc they were bigger than stated. So I guess there is a reason for using the biscuit cutter--next time I suppose I will do that. Easy, relatively quick, and tasty rolls. Thanks for the recipe!

Mango Frappe

Reviewed: Aug. 29, 2009
Very limey. My mango tastes a little odd, but I guess that's bc I bought some jarred mango in syrup--what you buy in the refrigerated produce section--and have never had it before. fresh mango is definitely better. But it worked to try it. I agree with Sunny--the lime is very strong, so I'd cut that down. I actually didn't use any ice bc I only have my food processor and I've been told not to use ice in it. I suppose I'll have to get a blender one of these days and try it again. It was good even without the ice. thanks for the recipe!

Summer Thyme Bread

Reviewed: Aug. 29, 2009
Pretty good, basic bread. It was a bit dry, so I added maybe 1/4 cup of water. Still, that's not a big deal--it all depends on the humidity when you make it that depends on how much flour you need. It's a bit crumbly, although I'm thinking that might be my fault. I set the timer then went downstairs so I couldn't hear it . . .oops! Bread didn't burn, just got a bit over done so the crust was hard to cut. Other than that, it is a good, basic bread. nothing spectacular, but it's good for sandwiches if a bit crumbly (but again, that might be bc I overbaked it a bit). Thanks for the recipe!

Smoked Mozzarella and Pesto Sandwich

Reviewed: Aug. 29, 2009
I really thought I would love this bc I often make sandwiches just like this all the time with cheese and tomato. I don't know if I wasn't as hungry as I thought or what, though, bc I ate only half the sandwich. I toasted everything except the lettuce and let the cheese melt, then topped with lettuce. I left out the mayo (can't stand it) and used sun dried tomato pesto. Something, though, didn't hit it for me. Maybe the lettuce? Thanks for the recipe!

Butternut Squash Fries

Reviewed: Aug. 29, 2009
I used pattypan squash with this since I don't have butternut squash right now. I also just sliced very thin and made what would probably be considered home fries. I couldn't find what I wanted for a plain pattypan squash recipe, and this hit the spot. I'll definitely try again with butternut squash cut like fries. I, too, used olive oil and chose to use kosher salt bc I like how it looks on fries. Thanks for the recipe!
