Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies III

Reviewed: Oct. 17, 2009
Other reviewers are right; this recipe doesn't make 60 cookies, and I used my smallest cookie scoop. At any rate, these aren't bad, they don't spread too much (with the consistency of the dough I was afraid that they would), and it's a nice flavor combo. However, I think I would prefer less chocolate chips and more peanut butter, so I think I'll stick with pb cookies next time. Thanks for the recipe!

Sausage Pepper Sandwiches

Reviewed: Oct. 17, 2009
Okay, I really really liked these and so did bf. I didn't have italian sausage so I subbed Chedderwurst and smoked sausage (I couldn't decide so decided to do both!). I added more sausage and tomato sauce than called for bc a few people mentioned the recipe didn't make much. Well, perhaps I overdid it bc there's still a lot left but I think I'll freeze half. We definitely liked this enough that I'm fine with leftovers (I'm not a big fan of them at all!). Bf asked me if I put in Red Hot and I'm wondering if that's from the chedderwurst being a bit spicy, but it's all good. I also added a bit more garlic than called for, and instead of tomato sauce itself I used a jar of garlic and olive oil spaghetti sauce. Worked great. Thanks for the recipe!

Italian Bread Baked on a Pizza Stone

Reviewed: Oct. 17, 2009
Very nice, very easy. for people complaining about stickiness . . .making dough is often dependent on the moisture level in the air, which is why sometimes it's too dry, sometimes too wet . . .you may have to add liquid or flour depending on the weather where you live. it's been raining here for days, but weirdly enough my dough wasn't too wet or sticky. i did, however, oil a bowl and let it rise for the third time in there bc bf wanted to go to Costco in the middle of me making this recipe. so, that may have cut out some of the stickiness people are complaining about, although it wasn't that sticky when I took it out of the bread machine. I almost forgot to bake it on the pizza stone . . I was just going along, doing what I always do and put the bread on the cookie sheet to rise. Since I did that, I just pulled the bread off the cookie sheet with the silpat mat and put it on the stone that way. Worked just fine. Thanks for the recipe!

Quick Sausage and Bell Pepper Calzones

Reviewed: Oct. 17, 2009
Very easy, and if you make the filling ahead of time, relatively quick. I used turkey sausage links and pepperoni since I didn't have enough sausage. I made the filling the night before and stuffed them today. I used crescent rolls and although it took me a bit of time to put them together, I figured out the best way is to use 2 of the crescent rolls to make a rectangle, then top with another two and seal the edges. Worked perfectly. 16 minutes was perhaps a little too long with the crescent rolls, as they were a bit browner than perhaps I'd like, but still good. Thanks for the recipe!

Blueberry Drop Cookies

Reviewed: Oct. 16, 2009
These are lovely little cookies. They really are like little mini muffin tops--delicious! I refrigerated overnight then baked. They don't spread too much and browned nicely (without browning too much) in my oven at 15 minutes. I froze them to stop myself from eating them! I didn't change the recipe at all and didn't notice any bitter taste, spreading, etc. Perhaps the key is refrigerating overnight--whatever, they were great and worked well. Thanks for the recipe!

Green Bean Bundles

Reviewed: Oct. 13, 2009
I modified this a bit since I didn't have bacon. I did, however, have turkey lunchmeat so I sliced the meat into thirds lengthwise and used the turkey meat to wrap the bundles. I did marinate overnight and heated up in the oven for dinner. I put it at 375 and it was still a little lukewarm after 15-20 minutes, so I'd say it needs baked longer if starting from the fridge. Of course, it could just be my oven that takes forever. I definitely think these need marinated--the flavor wasn't too strong, but it was still there after marinating overnight. My guess is that if you cook as is without marinating the flavor might not be there. All in all, we really liked these. Yes, a bit time consuming but if you do it in steps it's not so hard. I made these and another green bean recipe last night so as to steam the beans all at once, which helped. Thanks for the recipe!

Round Whole Wheat Loaves

Reviewed: Oct. 13, 2009
Very good bread. You can really taste the honey in this, so if that's what you want, go for it. I was wanting bread with butter and honey and was going to add the honey on top until I took a bite and realized I didn't need it. I halved the recipe and made two smaller loaves that worked just fine. Thanks for the recipe!

Sweet 'n' Sour Meatballs

Reviewed: Oct. 12, 2009
Very good sauce. I didn't make the meatballs, so I can't speak to those, but the sauce was good and very easy. I didn't have gingersnaps so I just used all the spices and flavorings from gingersnaps and added corn starch to thicken them up. I used turkey sausage and turkey meatballs and it was good. Thanks for the recipe!

Easy Garden Green Beans

Reviewed: Oct. 12, 2009
I don't agree with others who said the taste of vinegar was too strong . . .I didn't taste it much at all. They were good green beans, but I've had more flavorful green beans. Of course, I adore green beans so I try as many recipes as I can, so I'm a bit jaded. Thanks for the recipe!

Tantalizing Turkey and Blue Cheese Meatballs

Reviewed: Oct. 8, 2009
Pretty good! I cut back a bit on the jalapenos bc I'm not so fond of them. Instead of pulsing them with the garlic and onions then mixing it into the turkey by hand, I just tossed everything, turkey and all, into the food processor and mixed it that way. Worked really well, especially since I halved the recipe. I made both meatballs and a couple of turkey burgers (fried on stovetop) bc I was in the mood for a sandwich this evening. Thanks for the recipe!

Turkey Bake with Whole Wheat Pasta

Reviewed: Oct. 8, 2009
Very good! I added some more flavor by adding garlic, crushed red pepper, oregano, basil, and rosemary to the turkey while cooking, and I used an entire jar of sauce even though I halved the recipe. (What can I say? I LOVE tomato sauce!). I didn't have ricotta so I just left it out, and I added broccoli to the cheese mixture to up the veggie count. Turned out excellent. Very nice, very flavorful. Turkey doesn't always have much of a flavor so I'm always spicing it up. I made this up and refrigerated the night before, so instead of the oven on 300 for 30 minutes I upped the temp to 350 and the time to 50 minutes so it would heat through and melt the cheese. I don't think this would have been necessary if I'd made the entire thing the same day. Thanks for the recipe!

Savory Crescent Chicken

Reviewed: Oct. 6, 2009
Pretty good. I brushed with oil instead of butter and used bread crumbs instead of croutons. I like the flavor in these although I'd like to add broccoli to them. How, I'm not sure, though, as these are pretty small. I may have cooked too much chicken as I ended up with enough filling for 8 of these, not four. That was okay bc I have enough crescent rolls. These aren't especially quick but I like them and they bear repeating. I'm sure cheese instead of the cream cheese would be great too. Thanks for the recipe!

Apple Squares

Reviewed: Oct. 4, 2009
Very nice. It does taste like a gooey coffee cake, as one reviewer mentioned. I doubled the recipe and made it in the 9x9 pan, although I heeded other reviewer's comments about the topping and kept that to the regular amount. Very crunchy on top and gooey, but not liquidy, and it makes for a very nice snack. I did bake longer--about 2x as long bc I doubled it, and it worked just fine. I put Apple Tapioca over squares for dessert tonight and felt it was lovely. Thanks for the recipe!

Great Green Salad

Reviewed: Oct. 4, 2009
Not too bad, although this salad is definitely begging for some different color. I wasn't too impressed when I'd assembled it--everything except the almonds kind of blend together visually. I think it would be much better with some craisins, and tossing in some tomatoes would help too. It wasn't that memorable; the dressing was fine (I halved it) but not memorable and the salad itself was the same. I'd definitely need to jazz it up a bit in order to make it again. Thanks for the recipe.

Sweet and Sour Ham Steak

Reviewed: Oct. 4, 2009
Not bad. I think I'd use the sauce as a marinade next time--I've just learned that I'm not a huge fan of basting! I felt like I wasted a ton of the sauce. It was quite easy though, and the flavor was pretty good. Bf never noticed there was mustard in it. Score! ;o) I'll make it again but use the sauce as a marinade. thanks for the recipe!

Unbelievable Grilled Garlic Bread

Reviewed: Oct. 4, 2009
This is not so bad, although I did cut way back on the mayo, and if I make it again I think I'll use margarine instead--personal preference. I didn't have a loaf of french bread, but I did have thin slices of a round loaf I made yesterday, so I used that instead. I burned a few of the slices while crisping on the grill, so I tossed a couple to the birds. That hurdle leaped, though, I put the spread on each slice then put the slices of bread together like sandwiches and put in the foil on the top rack of the grill while I grilled ham slices. Worked pretty well, although I would prefer not to grill these if I did it again. I usually broil my garlic bread, and apparently I'm better with the broiler than the grill. Bf seemed so so on these--they were a bit too crispy for him. I think they are okay but I don't think the mayo is my thing. thanks for the recipe!

Apple Tapioca

Reviewed: Oct. 4, 2009
Yum! I really like this--and it's a snap to prepare. The hardest part is peeling and slicing the apples and remembering to stir the sauce while it's on the stove. I found it to be a perfect combo of sweet and tart. Bf wasn't as thrilled, but he's not as excited about tart foods as I am. I really think, though, that the type of apples used in this will determine the sweetness and the tartness. I used Ginger Gold apples. I normally buy Gala, which probably would have satisfied bf since they are a sweeter apple, but I wanted to try these when I saw them at Costco. We served over apple squares I made earlier, but this would also be great over ice cream. The ice cream might also make it sweeter for bf. thanks for the recip!

Honey Granola Bread

Reviewed: Oct. 3, 2009
Not bad at all. Tastes like a whole grain bread, and the crust is just crunchy enough to be good. I like the idea of the oil--very creative. Can't say I ever thought of using oil, but it makes the crust very shiny and nice and crunchy. I know the recipe said not to use granola with raisins, but I did it anyway since I'm very rebellious. It was still very good. My granola also had almonds, so I didn't bother to add any. I made one round loaf and one in the bread pan for a regular loaf. the regular loaf needed about 40 minutes total. Thanks for the recipe!

Hearts of Palm Salad

Reviewed: Oct. 3, 2009
I found this to be a lovely salad, but I have to agree with everyone who stated there is too much dressing and too much oil. I scaled the recipe down--I only had one jar of hearts of palm, and a smaller one at that--so I only used one packet of dressing and I followed the directions on the packet for less oil (1/4 c oil, 1/4 c water) but left out the water. Even leaving out the water and with the addition of some tomatoes and a large cucumber to this salad, there is too much dressing. The amount of oil was fine in the dressing itself, but I'd say half the amount of dressing would be fine and would still allow the flavors to meld. I certainly like the salad and will probably make it again, but I'll definitely cut back on the dressing. Thanks for the recipe!

Honey Wheat Cookies

Reviewed: Oct. 3, 2009
I definitely like these, and although you can tell that they are somewhat different with healthier ingredients, they almost taste like less sweet peanut butter cookies. They are very soft and bake up golden. I concur with other reviewer's suggestions to add oats and raisins--I think the next time I make them I will add golden raisins and about 1/2 cup of oats. Even without those things, these cookies are very nice. I like that they aren't very sweet and I love the taste of the peanut butter. Very nice cookie that would be lovely for breakfast. Thanks for the recipe!
