Once we bought our own house I came in to my own in the kitchen. My husband never knew I could cook (we'd been living together for 8 years!) and was amazed when I whipped up my first batch of Pad Thai. I might not be able to create anything great without a recipe but I'm working on it. My only big thing about cooking is that I won't try what I made until others do, so far I think I have only thrown out 3 things after the first bite.
My favorite things to cook
I LOVE baking bread in the fall and winter as well as casseroles and ethnic food. Potato bread is a cold weather staple at my house with a big bowl of soup or chili.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My mother always made everyone in the family cook a dish at Thanksgiving. She made the Turkey, potatoes and stuffing, I made a casserole (broccoli casserole, my all time fave), my brother made pumpkin pie, dad made lima beans. This has been our tradition for 20 years. When my grandfather was alive he would make a salad until he was 75 when he decided that we didn't really need salad anymore.
My cooking triumphs
Easter x 2. The first Easter in our house (2003) I wanted lamb but I knew that not everyone would like that so I made ham too. I went a little crazy and ended up making two full meals for 12. We had Baked Ham, cheesy potatoes, green beans and rolls and Grilled Lamb, rice pilaf, and succotash with homemade cresent rolls and 2 types of tarts for desesrt (ricotta berry and carmel cookie).
My cooking tragedies
Runners World Mac & Cheese
My husband runs marathons so we always like to try the suggestions from Runner's World. This one tasted horrible, lucky for him, we had a box of Kraft in the cupboard.
