I'm a single mommy of three with a full time job in the legal field. Lucky for my girls that I find cooking to be a great way to blow off steam! They take turns helping me with dinners and they all help with larger projects.
I also love running and core strengthening. Good thing since I love food!
I also love being able to pick up and partake in some harebrained scheme with my friends.
Lastly, I love taking pictures of my loved ones and my experiences (well except of me exercising. Nobody wants those - to include me!). I'm thankful that I've been in love with that for years now as I have all those pictures to look at whenever I like. :)
My favorite things to cook
I really do love big projects. Breads, stews, soups, whole birds... great foods that take a little thought and a lot of love to make the house smell good all day.
I also love to grill. I will try to grill almost anything! A few less common foods I've grilled are pizzas (bread makin' and grill fix all rolled up into one right there, baby!), breakfast burritos, whole roasts, endive (I can't think of a veggie I haven't grilled, actually).
I also like cooking the same meals I had as a child.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My mother was far more free with her kitchen that I can ever imagine being. I was able to make dinner for our family of six on a regular basis at the age of 8. I'm talking chopping, boiling, frying, and baking. I was thrilled to have the opportunity and made many horrible meals for everyone before finally getting it right! I LOVED doing it(most of the time)! Of course, I don't let my girls do that as it really just isn't safe.
Now, I love cooking dishes with the girls although I don't always love eating them!
My cooking triumphs
When I was in high school, our old oven would die every time it got really cold outside. I have no idea why. This particular winter was so bad, we'd been off school for about a week due to snow storms. I told my mom one morning I was pretty sure I could "build" an oven on the stove (our oven and stove were separate appliances) and make lasagna for dinner. She gave me the go ahead to try. I prepared the lasagna and covered the top with tin foil. Then I got out four wine glasses and filled them with water. I set the lasagna on top of them. I then took foil and made a foil wrap around the burner with the glasses on the outside of it. I wrapped wet washclothes around the wine stems. All I had to do then was regularly adjust the fire (gas stove) to keep the food cooking but not burning and make sure the washclothes stayed wet.
It took a LOT longer but can you believe it worked??? I got so much praise from everybody that I felt like a rockstar!
My cooking tragedies
I have two HORRIBLE ones which immediately come to mind. I'm sure there are volumes more though. :)
1 - I was 8 or 9. My three siblings asked me what would happen if I mixed up a box of angel food cake mix with the hand mixer (JUST the powder). So I did and it was SWEET! It went EVERYWHERE and you couldn't see through it! But then we had clean it up before our parents got home. This included the ceiling.
2 - I found a recipe for cabbage soup for the crockpot. I LOVE cabbage soup! Sadly, this was the most foul thing I've ever put in my mouth in my life. Hands down. I took two bites and told the girls we were going out to eat. Tragically, I was really pumped about the recipe and had doubled it... total waste of great ingredients.
