About this Cook
I'm an aspiring cook in my mid-twenties. I dabbled in cooking for my family a bit prior to college, but in the past few years of living on my own it's been cook or starve, so I'm definitely starting to come into my own. I like to play around with new recipes and work on recreating some of my family's old ones. I'm not quite at the "make up your own recipe" stage of the game yet, but hope to be able to do so in the future.
My favorite things to cook
I bake a lot. Cookies, muffins, cakes, loafs etc. I also like to work a lot with ground turkey and chicken, since I don't eat pork or red meat. I love cooking Italian and Mexican and experimenting with new poultry and vegetarian main dishes.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My mother is an excellent re-heater. To my grade school teachers, she was known as "Mrs. Entenmanns." My Nana, on the other hand, was an amazing cook and I'm trying to follow in her footsteps.
My cooking triumphs
As a child my family always went to a restaurant for Thanksgiving dinner, but for the past two years I have cooked Thanksgiving dinner for my family at home. There are only 6 of us now, but it still feels like a wonderful accomplishment putting together a menu (frequently comprised of recipes from allrecipes.com!), shopping for ingredients, cooking all day, and of course the "ooo"s, "ahh"s and "mmm"s!
My cooking tragedies
My pinnacle cooking tragedy was in 7th grade Home Ec class. I had been placed at the one cooking station in the classroom with a brand new microwave, and was instructed to melt a stick of butter. I put the full stick, foil wrapping and all, into the microwave and hit start. The rest is history....

Cranberry Pumpkin Muffins
Delish! My only minor alterations were using half a cup canned pumpkin and half a cup apple sauce instead of a whole cup canned pumpkin, because that's what I had on hand, and I used about 1 1/2-2 cups fresh cranberries, chopped. I left my first batch in the oven for 18 minutes and they were slightly overdone. I only cooked the second batch for 16, and those two minutes made a ton of difference. I also only got 18 muffins, not 24. Great recipe, though—will definitely make again (especially since the CSA has been sending us cranberries like crazy)!

Butterfinger Cookies
Pretty good! Just want to reiterate what several other reviews have said: DON'T LEAVE THEM IN THE OVEN FOR MORE THAN 10-12 MIN!! They won't look done after that amount of time, but take them out anyway. They'll firm up as they cool. Learned that the hard way with my first horribly burnt batch... Once I got the cook time down, the non-burned finished product was quite tasty-- though, honestly, I think the raw dough tasted better than the cookies themselves.

Easy Fruit Cobbler
So quick and easy! Followed some other reviewers suggestions and added in 1 tsp vanilla and used half white sugar and half light brown. Didn't have quite enough peaches, so used half peaches, half raspberries (had them on hand). Delicious-- and so simple! Definitely will try again with other fruit variations!
