Mrs. Sigg's Snickerdoodles

Reviewed: Aug. 6, 2009
They are delicious and very pretty, but I leave out the cream of tartar, I think it makes them taste too tangy. Overall an awesome recipe, they turn out perfectly every time (and the amount of sugar and cinnamon is EXACTLY what is needed -every time!)

Potato-Crust Chicken Quiche

Reviewed: Apr. 17, 2007
In a hurry to prepare lunch, I decided to try this recipe after doing an ingredient search on that website. Well, we were not impressed. First it took about 40 minutes to finish baking the egg and milk mixture. Then the potato "crust" lost its crunch and ended up a little soggy. The taste was ok since there was no bad ingredients (just potatoes, chicken, eggs and cheese), but in reality it was more like a breakfast casserole and was a bit bland, even after the addition of some spices. I was going to give it 3 stars but my husband said it was more like a 2. As he pointed out, I would have been better off making grilled chicken with a side of my regular crispy hash browns!

Rice Salad in Tomato Cups

A rice and tomatoes salad with a nice presentation... Not bad at all, but even better if you add tuna and chopped olives to the stuffing :) Oh, and don't discard all of the pulp, it tastes good!

Decadent Bars

Reviewed: Apr. 4, 2007
...Wow! these have an amazing, "addictive" flavor, said my husband. Very moist, sweet but not too sweet, maybe a little bit cakey, but I might have overmixed the batter. I didn't have all the ingredients so I had to change a few things, but I guess I got lucky because they were delicious! I had no shortening so I used 1/2 cup butter and 1/4 cup of half vegetable oil, half whipping cream. Used sliced almonds instead of butterscotch chips and included 1/4 cup powdered almonds (removed 1/4 cup flour). Baked 23 minutes. I love how the orange, coconut and almond flavors blended together, the result smelled and tasted quite delicate and refined. Will make again.

Crusty French Bread

Reviewed: Apr. 3, 2007
This baguette might have the crunchiest crust of any bread I've made -I've been looking for such a crust for quite a while! I also like the soft texture of the inside, and the taste too, although it might be a little bit sweet for me. I baked it for 25 mn and it was slightly overcooked, so next time I'll have to remember that. A good bread all in all, not quite like my favorite baguettes as for the taste and appearance, but definitely a keeper.

MMMMM... Brownies

Reviewed: Mar. 28, 2007
When I saw these awesome brownie pictures I thought I just had to try them! I liked the fact that they contain chocolate chips instead of cocoa. Unfortunately I realized a little too late that I didn't have any more eggs! To save the recipe, I substituted them with 4 Tbsp powdered marzipan mix (that contained dried egg yolks)and 2 Tbsp water... They came out great, very chewy with a deep chocolate flavor. My husband thought they were "outstanding"! I, however, think I've had better. But I will try them again with eggs, and update my review if necessary :)

Authentic French Meringues

Reviewed: Mar. 24, 2007
Great recipe: the oven temperature and cooking time is just right, and if like me you live in a very dry place, there's no reason these won't turn out perfect! I start with about 1 cup of confectionner's sugar and then taste the batter until I find it sweet enough :) I also add a good teaspoon of real vanilla extract (makes the meringue taste more refined, in my opinion). Also, I do use a pastry bag when I intend to give them away since it makes them pretty, but I found that if I just shape the meringue by scooping some of the batter with a big spoon they end up being more fluffy, less flat... Last touch: dip the top half of each meringue in dark chocolate and let it dry... Heaven!

Eclair Cake

A friend of mine made this for me, and I couldn't seem to get enough of it! Especially the next day, as someone stated. Except for the texture it tasted just like those mille-feuilles I've had back in France... Yummy!

Quick and Easy Home Fries

Always delicious! I make sure to wipe them dry with a clean kitchen towel before I throw them in the skillet, so they're really crispy. And I do use olive oil most of the time instead of butter.

French Crepes

Reviewed: Oct. 21, 2006
Ok, I'll be honest -I haven't really tried this recipe but I'm giving them a good review because they seem to be very close to crepes as I like them :)The only thing that's missing from the ingredients is some kind of flavoring: orange blossom extract, vanilla, rhum or even beer... With a little kick they taste so much better and are much lighter too :)

Yummy French Toast

Delicious, I made only a few changes: I toast them in butter instead of oil, use a lot less nutmeg and sprinkle them with sliced almonds. Sometimes I add a bit of cream along with the milk and use brown sugar as well.

Whipped Mashed Potatoes

Reviewed: Oct. 19, 2006
I didn't know you could make mashed potatoes without whipping them! Whipping is definitely what makes them creamy -especially if you add cream to the batter! If you want them to be extra fluffy as well, place your bowl of mashed potatoes, covered, over a simmering saucepan of water for 10-15 mn. In addition to keeping them warm, the texture will be fantastic! Don't forget to add salt and pepper -and a grating of nutmeg if you like.

Tasty Buns

Reviewed: Jul. 17, 2006
What great buns! So fast and easy to make it's almost a joke, and they're perfect for hamburgers. I've changed only a few things: I slightly reduced the amount of sugar and used almost 1 tablespoon of salt, used bread flour instead of all-purpose and mixed a little bit of olive oil in the vegetable oil, just to give the bread some extra flavor. Thanks a lot, I'll make these again for sure!

Quick Tuna Casserole

Reviewed: Jun. 21, 2006
When I think of a typical American home-made dish I think of a tuna casserole -don't ask me why! This one is very good(almost addicting!) and really easy, although not particularly healthy -especially with how my husband and I top it with extra cheese and jalapeno potato chips :) I also add pepper and a grating of nutmeg to taste, and sometimes fresh herbs like parsley.

Janine's Best Banana Bread

Reviewed: Mar. 28, 2006
Well, I've never had banana bread before, so I'm not sure how it's supposed to taste like ideally, but I think this one is pretty good :) First, it looks beautiful, all golden and puffy, and I sprinkled it with sugar before baking to make it shiny. Very moist inside and just a little crispy outside. I added 1 tablespoon vanilla and a sprinkling of cinnamon for the taste, and used both white and light brown sugar to make it less sweet, although I'm not completely sure that this was necessary. Oops, and I've just realized that I got mixed up: I used baking powder instead of baking soda -that's probably why mine turned out so puffed up :). But I think the taste could still be improved -so next time I'll try to put one more banana, and maybe some chocolate chips, too.

Potato and Cauliflower Casserole

Reviewed: Mar. 22, 2006
I make this casserole all the time! Although I use milk instead of cream for the bechamel sauce, it tastes truly delicious -a real comfort food! I add a grating of nutmeg and dry bread crumbs on top in addition to the cheese, and pass it under the broiler for a few minutes for a little crispiness... My husband adores it.

Sue's Two-Chocolate Chip Cookies

I use this recipe as a base for what have become my favorite cookies! I've changed just a few things, because I still never use shortening at home :)... 1/2 cup butter and 1/4 cup vegetable oil (yep, I always try to cut on the fat!). And I also add 1/4 flour and 1/2 cup macaroon coconut to improve the consistency to my taste... I LOVE THEM!!

Spinach Pancakes

Reviewed: Mar. 21, 2006
A good, basic recipe, thanks! It requires so few ingredients that I decided to give it a try yesterday (I had almost nothing in my fridge!):) However I altered the recipe as such which, in my opinion, makes it 4 stars worth: 1 cup drained spinach mixed with 1 Tbsp mustard, 1 cup steamed & mashed potatoes, a bit of fresh parsley, a grating of nutmeg, 1/4 cup shredded cheese. Overwise I followed the directions ;) It was really good and easy.
