About this Cook
What's to tell? I'm divorced, the mother of two adult children, and I love to collect recipes and cookbooks. I read them like a good spy thriller. In my spare time, I like to potter around in the kitchen and try new recipes. I also like to knit, crochet and cross stitch. I read constantly, sometimes to the detriment of other chores. I will read nearly anything that has words, but I prefer science fiction, fantasy, mystery, and classics. You know, all the stuff we had to read in high school?
My favorite things to cook
Since I live alone, I like anything that is quick and easy, with a minimum of clean up. I also like those dishes that are simple to make, but look really impressive. I like the oohs and ahhs I get from my co-workers. :)
My favorite family cooking traditions
For the past several years, the female half of my mother's family has gotten together a couple of days before Thanksgiving for a potluck. Mom does the meat and everybody brings whatever. It's a wonderful visit, and in some cases, the only time we get to see each other all year.
My cooking triumphs
I recently made dinner for a friend of mine whose wife was out of town. He described my pork tenderloin as "lyrical". I also have a recipe for brownies that came from my grandmother. I had used it for years and quite by accident, stumbled upon a flavor variation. Well, with my imagination, I soon came up with peanut butter, orange, mint, mocha, butterscotch, and blonde brownies, all from that one recipe. I've gotten more mileage out of that recipe than some of my cookbooks.
My cooking tragedies
I found out that Grandma's brownie recipe will not stretch as far as banana brownies. Yech.
