Married with four teenage boys.I like Michigan but, loved growing up in California. My sister still lives in California (Bay Area) and I love to go back and see what's new. Food choices in Michigan are very limited. It's hard to find the "Mom and Pop" places that offer something unique and tasty that you MUST go back for or recommend. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know. I really don't care for the the "chain" resturants. (sp?).
My favorite things to cook
Mexican and Italian. Besides being tasty, they feed my growing boys and are somewhat inexpensive. The boys and I love asian but my husband (native of Michigan) does not care for it. I think he just needs to try the good stuff! He loves polish dishes that I've made so I would love to find more recipes.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Tamales on Christmas eve! I have no idea how to cook them but my friends mothers were great cooks! My family favorites would be holidays with the works! My grandmother would host a coctail hour with great finger foods and relish trays. Does anyone serve relish trays anymore? I would love ideas! I also loved her southern fried chicken (from my grandfathers side growing up in S. Carolina)which I cant seem to master yet. She grew up in Rhode Island so we had great awesome east coast flavor as well as S. Carolina favorites.
My cooking triumphs
Mastering a recipe handed down. It's called Heavenly Pie. I usually don't do dessert but, had to learn this one to continue carrying it down. It's like no other! I believe it's a french recipe.
My cooking tragedies
Usually trying to cook asian food. I just can't seem to get it right. The rice is too sticky or something is too greasy. I love spring rolls or lumpia and can't find it here in Michigan. So, I tried it..... I think I will wait till I visit back home!
