About this Cook
I started out as a Navy Brat, and have lived everywhere, my favorite place being Scotland. I am now a recent transplant to Arkansas, and have recently developed a small obsession with cookbooks and collecting recipes, so here I am.
My favorite things to cook
Anything on the grill. The thing I love most about summer is the near daily dinners cooked on the grill, although it is not unheard of to find me out there in rain, cold, thunderstorms, and snow, too. Kind of like the mailman. Lately, I've really been getting into baking, I'd like to improve my skills there.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Sitting down to eat it all. Helping my mom decorate Christmas cookies. Learning to make a new pie.
My cooking triumphs
I generally do my best when I keep things simple. I make wicked Grilled Caesar Chicken, and everyone loves my Hashbrown Casserole.
My cooking tragedies
The first ever meatloaf I made was tragic. I was 11 or 12 at the time and cooking dinner to cheer up my dad, pretending to be a chef in a restaurant with a friend of mine. I followed a recipe on a Quaker Oatmeal box, and it was awful...an inch and a half of grease floating on top! I've rarely made meatloaf since then, and never again with that recipe.

Spicy Slow Cooker Black Bean Soup
Sorry, this one just didn't work out for me. I soaked the dried beans overnight and then followed the recipe, but the beans were still hard at the end of cooking. I also thought that while it certainly had spice, it lacked flavor. I kept the leftovers and will try to salvage this by using it as a base for another black bean soup recipe I've found.

Banana Crumb Muffins
I made these almost exactly as posted and these are really lovely, moist and tasty. The only thing I did differently was to use 1/4 tsp cinnamon in the topping since I don't have a 1/8 tsp. I think the 1/4 tsp was just fine. Next time I think I may follow other reviewer's suggestions and add nutmeg, cinnamon, and vanilla to the batter because I like a bit more spice, but even as-is these are yummy!

Bumbleberry Pie II
This is the first time I've ever had, made or heard of Bumbleberry Pie, and since I had most of the ingredients on hand, I had to give it a try. I used 1 1/2 cups each of frozen strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries, thawed and drained, no rhubarb, and 1 red delicious apple, which came up to 1 1/2 cups. I subbed 2tsp corn starch for the tapioca and went with my own crust and this? Is just too yummy. Another commenter said that this pie is very forgiving of substitutions and I have to agree. Like other commenters, I also agree that this pie needs to cool before you eat it or it will be runny. This might also be a good recipe to use for just a one berry pie - either way, I have a feeling this is going to become a new summer staple around my house!
