About this Cook
I am 40 years old, happily married and living in Scarborough, Ontario. We have recently purchased our retirement home. Although it will be many years until we retire, we go there every weekend and for vacations. This is where I do most of my cooking for the week.
My favorite things to cook
I love to cook different things on the weekends, when I have time and we are in the country. I love Mexican and Thai foods. Anything with lots of flavour.
My favorite family cooking traditions
The holidays are always a good time for cooking. We have the usual, turkey and ham and then we each bring a dish to my parent's house, so there is an ecclectic selection of foods.
My cooking triumphs
Anything that is really easy to make but looks like it took a long time, like the Mexican Shredded pork from this site. It's delicious and the slow cooker does most of the work.
My cooking tragedies
I tried to make cupcakes to take to my husband's family get together. My oven's bake element was way too hot, so they burned. That's when I learned, and got an oven thermometer.

Classic Bran Muffins
These bran muffins are excellent! I made them yesterday. We had company and the disappeared very quickly. I will have to make another batch this weekend. Thanks for the great recipe.

Apple Pie by Grandma Ople
I made this pie for my husband's birthday. He loved it and said it was better than his grandmother's in some ways. I did add 1 tsp of cinnamon as well as 1 tsp vanilla, as others had suggested and baked the bottom crust for 10 minutes. Next time I will mix the apples in with the sauce before putting in the pie shell.

Challah I
This bread is very good, but I did make a few amendments. First I put 1 tbsp of sugar in the warm water with the yeast and let the yeast bloom for 10 minutes. I added an extra egg and sprinkled with sesame seeds before baking. I do find that it doesn't come out as light textured as I would like, so next time I will add a touch more yeast. Overall, it's a very good bread.
