About this Cook
My cooking triumphs
I once entered a candy cooking competition. I found an English Toffee recipe to tweak. It was my first time making candy and it called for getting butter up to a certain temperature. Well, it started burning before I reached that temp, but I wasn't throwing all that expensive butter away. I proceeded with the recipe and entered it as English Burnt Butter Toffee. I could hear the judges commenting on how well the burnt taste came through! If I hadn't changed the name, I'm sure they would have wrinkled their noses and said, "Ooh! This butter is burnt! Ugh!" By the way, I won the contest! Because of this, I have allowed myself to try more things, be more adventurous in cooking and in life. Hey, if it doesn't turned out like the way you planned, you didn't lose, you only re-invented! So go out and be adventurous

The Old Boy's Strawberry Pie
I used a Pillsbury pie crust and it was mushy. Also, I needed 1 cp more berries than called for. The strawberries were at their peak of flavor, but the pie turned out to be only so-so. I followed the recipe exactly and it seems the higher ratings came from people who changed it.

Grilled Peaches
Easy to make, although I would probably suggest using a mild blue cheese. I used a Maytag blue and it was too strong. I also used 2 halves per person as I doubled the recipe.

Best Ever Banana Bread
This is terrific. I use any bananas left over at the end of the week. Sometimes I throw in a handful of chocolate chips. It keeps very well when you mail it. My son's at college and eagerly looks forward to it. How long does it keep at home? Who knows; it's never around long enough to find out! Simply terrific!
