Cumin in my Oatmeal?

Well, my spice and herb collection has outgrown the narrow little cabinet it once shared with my vinegars and other condiments, so a while back I moved all those little jars to the middle tier of the lazy susan in my corner cabinet...then I had to find another spot for my vast collection of teas that I never drink!  But that's a subject for another blog...

I arranged them carefully on the shelf, strategically placing the tall jars in the back, the short stubby ones in the front, all the while maintaining alphabetic order.  It worked great for a while!  With one quick spin of the "wheel" I could browse through my herbs and spices any time I was looking for inspiration.  Last night I was looking for something different to do with grilled chicken breasts, and I actually came up with a pretty good marinade using garlic, lemon juice, fennel seed, thyme salt and pepper.  I smashed the garlic and seasonings in my rarely used mortar & pestle, making my 4 year old giggle as I cackled, "Poppies! Poppies will make you sleeeepy!"   My my, how that girl loves her Wizard of Oz!!  I think I'll have to start using the mortar and pestle more often.  I love making her laugh!

But I digress!  The chicken breasts were pounded thin, marinated for about a half hour and grilled in my grill pan - they came out great!  I love fennel, and am actually working on attacking the next letter in my alphabetic journey through my spices and herbs, F,  by featuring fennel seed, so I think the "official" marinade recipe will make an appearance there.  Oh, and pictures...as soon as I can find my camera.  I suspect the Flying Monkeys might have scooped it up.

I noticed, though, that my herbs and spices have fallen out of order over the past couple weeks.  I've slacked off on putting them back in just the right order, so of course I have to hunt for the oregano or the poppy seeds when I need them.  And this morning proved to me that I need to set aside a few minutes to empty the lazy susan and restock it correctly...

I've been trying really hard to eat right and lose weight, and have been doing pretty well!  Nearly 14 lbs. lighter than I was January 1st, I still have a ways to go, but I have settled into a pretty comfortable rotating menu that I haven't become bored with yet. These days I start each day with a small bowl of berries, some combination of blueberries, stawberries, raspberries and fresh cherries, and a bowl of steel-cut oatmeal.  I make a batch every Sunday and bring a small portion to work each morning for breakfast.  I'm trying to stay away from adding sugar, and also taking a break from dairy, so I mix things up by adding a little cinnamon and agave nectar one day, some almond milk, nutmeg and honey the next.  Today was supposed to be cinnamon's turn...but, I have been lax in my organizational duties, soooo....

When I opened my container to pop in the microwave at work, I caught the unmistakable scent of cumin.  Which I love.  But not for breakfast.  Well, maybe on scrambled eggs.  Definitely not on oatmeal!  At first I thought, "Oh, someone must be having their lunch early." but then I realized what had happened.  In my haste, I must have grabbed the cumin instead of the cinnamon to dust my oatmeal with.  How it happened is beyond me - the jars look nothing alike.  Fortunately, at some point cinnamon was buy-one-get-one free, so I do have a spare jar in my desk at work.  I sprinkled it liberally on top of the cumin-scented oatmeal and dug in.

It was edible, actually not too bad.  But I don't think Cumin-Scented Steel Cut Oatmeal will make the rotation.  Nor am I rushing to submit it to Allrecipes.  Heck, I didn't even scribble it down in my little dog-eared notebook where the Lemon-Fennel Marinade is!  But I made myself laugh and hopefully you got a chuckle out of it, too!

Thanks for reading!  Fennel seed fans, stay tuned! :)

Might not be so out of the ordinary if you were having breakfast in Morocco or Mexico. Thanks for the laugh.

LOL Christine!! See alphabetical-izing spice racks DOES have some drawbacks!

Haha! That was so funny. You've inspired me to go clean out my family's spice cupboard. . . which is a huge undertaking, let me tell you!

LOL! Good laugh with you and Avon Lady! Good day to all!

Avon, I do feel rather worldly now! I just pretended in front of my co-workers that I meant to do it. "What? Doesn't EVERYONE put cumin and cinnamon in their oatmeal??" ;)

Trishie...Sing with me! Now I know my ABC's, next time won't you alphabeticalisize with me! ;) Momo - be forewarned! When I started this blog it was to use up the spices I've accumulated...I dare say I've actually added a few new ones!

Avon Lady - any day I can make you laugh (twice!) is a good day for me! (And I hate them too, but without them I wouldn't have my AR friends, so tolerate these evil machines!) ;)

We must have been separated at birth, Christine. Cumin and fennel or fennel and cumin, in which ever order, are my two mostest favoritest spices. Great blog. :)

Christine that's so funny!!! I totally understand the spice's getting out of control..I organize mine so well, I'm so proud of it, then in 2 weeks they are a mess again, out of order and so on. My big problem is I have 3 of almost every spice I have in my cabinet, I always think I don't have it or ran out, whatever, and its just ridiculous!! Thanks for the laugh (:

Awesome story! Don't worry, I eat savory oatmeal for breakfast (usually made with chicken broth and some crushed red pepper), so you can just pretend that's what it is!

14 pounds since Jan. That is great!! We all need encouragement. You said you were giving up dairy for awhile. Have you ever tried soy milk? I have been drinking and using soy milk in cereal & recipes for over 2 years. I love it. I use Silk brand. I never thought of making a big batch of oatmeal and then having it the rest of the week. What a good idea. I love a little sugar, cinnamon, and lots of raisins on mine. For something different add dried cranberries or even ginger. Your cumin story was funny!

Keep rockin' it, Christine! Our Steel-Cut Oatmeal gets dried ancho chile, honey, paprika, a mashed banana, almond butter, coconut milk, cinnamon, brown sugar, and salt before being topped with chopped jalapeno and apple. It'll definitely get you moving in the morning!

Christine! I did the same thing except I sprinkled cumin instead of cinnamon on an apple cooking in the microwave. I had planned to add it to the morning oatmeal. I washed off the apple, but the flavor remained. Ugh. DH hates cumin and said he could smell it all through the house

I'm laughing so hard right now.

Very funny post! I don't think I could have eaten the oatmeal with cumin! I had never cooked with fennel -fresh- didn't even know what it looked like- until I took a french cooking class and made a fennel confit-delicious! Keep up with the fennel recipes! Thanks!

I laughed with you, have done similar things and can't keep order in the spice cabinet (yes, mine have their very own cabinet) no matter how I try. When you're ready for your fennel month, try Grandmas Fennel bread from here, made it last weekend and it rocks!

This is funny only because I've done it before. And as stated it's edible and not horrible to eat. However, just not the look that we're going for (or taste rather) Yeah. This definitely is funny

Yikes! I ran out of room for my spices, as well. You'll never guess what did the trick....I bought one of those hanging shoe holders meant to hook over the top of and hang inside your closet doors. It has clear plastic pockets that are pretty good size (shoe size-obviously) and I can see every label clearly and you can group things together like sweet, Italian, Indian- even alphabetically. Works really well hanging just inside my little pantry closet.

Hey, finally someone who admits to changing things around whether by choice or mistake. I love making my own recipes and my friends are sometimes skeptical about eating that "new recipe" piece of cake or chicken casserole. But, that's what makes cooking fun. Let's keep it up!

That's why I don't use pre-ground spices--you can't mistake cumin seeds for cinnamon sticks.

Funny story that depicts how we rush around waaay too much! We need to slow down....

Where is that good fairy when you need her? A swoosh of the wand and it would have made the cumin into cinnamon! Ok, just click your heels and away you go... Thanks for the cute blog.

LOL, LOL. I actually did something very similar by substituting cornstarch in place of confectioners sugar because I store both in screw top mason jars. I now wrap one in brown paper so it doesn't happen again. Thanks for the chuckle!

Reminds me of the time I microwaved my cantaloupe instead of pasta... while cumin doesn't sound very good, cardamom in oatmeal is wonderful! (at a vacation rental & forgot the cinnamon, found the cardamom in the cabinet...now I do this at home!)

This is my first time accessing a blog on AR or anywere for that matter. I couldn't believe what I was reading when you said you had a vast collection of teas...that you never drink, and then you said you couldn't find your camera when you needed it...I had to look quick again at your name and where you were from to see where my twin was located! However, there is where our similarities ended! You must not have two grown up children living at home and a husband who deems himself a chef all wanting to do their own thing in the kitchen. Organizing anything in my kitchen is a dream gone bad. I have finally bowed out and just do the clean-up. Good luck with the organizing your spices. I enjoyed your blog.

Funny story. It reminds me of the time I worked in a kitchen where the head cook was legally blind. He relied on the spices being in alphabetical order. One day of course, it happened. He was making apple pies and somehow the cinnamon and cayenne had been switched. Hot apple pie! :)

Reminds me of the time my mother in law used chili powder instead of cinnamon in apple pudding. (I guess they do look a bit similar.) It was completely inedible! I now have a 4-sided spice rack and I organize my spices where each side contains similar items such as the cinnamon and cloves and nutmeg are on one side while the cumin, turmeric, and chili are on another side. Works great!

Yum, what an idea, cumin in oatmeal...i'm one of those savory-breakfast types and that sounds fun to me, along with coriander, cardamom, and coconut milk. Add some fresh mango...dreamy! I'm going to try it asap. Thanks!

I have a restaurant sized collection of spices and forget to label the small canning jars every now and again and have to guess.....I am glad I am not the only one to eat 'original' combinations(Mommy meant to do that, really!) LOL ......

When my son was about 13 and getting ready to bring some stuff in for the fair, he made cinnamon cookies, but grabbed the cumin instead - his excuse, both words start with c, end with n, and have an m in the middle!

Hi Christine, I just wanted to thank you for your kind words about my reviews a couple weeks ago. I know it's a bit late, but I did reply to you on my request page, but I'm not sure you got it. I hate when someone is nice to me, and I am not able to show my appreciation, so I looked for you a while to the recipe request page, but couldn't find you. This is the only place I could get in touch with you! So again, thank you, you had made my day with your comment!:)

About Me
I'm married and a mom to a three year-old daughter and also work outside the home. I do virtually all the cooking in our house (wouldn't have it any other way! My husband's idea of a vegetable is a potato...) We're putting in a pretty decent vegetable garden this year, and I always grow a good variety of herbs. If only I had enough land for a few fruit trees....well, maybe some day! We also have two big dogs, a Great Pyrenees and brand new Newfoundland, three very confused, angry cats and a 56-gallon fish tank (Um...thanks to the ice storm of Dec 2008 it is now an EMPTY fish tank...). If you're really bored :), come check out my very own, mostly food-based blog, http://marvelouslymundane.blogspot.com.
My favorite things to cook
Thanksgiving dinner has got to top the list - I love incorporating my family's traditions with my husband's family traditions, then adding our own new ones. As far as day to day cooking, I'm happiest when I'm baking! Although I don't mind spending time with complicated assembly every now and then, I prefer dishes where you toss everything together, like stir-fries, pasta dishes, stews and chili.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Holiday baking, Thanksgiving Dinner are my all-time favorite traditions. I love putting together buffets - it gives me an opportunity to try a variety of recipes.
My cooking triumphs
I had always wanted to do an elaborate wedding cake, so when a good friend's daughter got engaged I offered to do her wedding cake. I was not intimidated at first, BUT they were engaged for 3 years... It went from a 50 person do-it-yourself semi-potluck reception to a 140 person elegant, catered event. I worked on it for 3 days, baking, making the two fillings and batch after batch of Italian Meringue Buttercream. My mixer even burnt out and I had to run out and get a new one at 10:30 P.M. The results? Although I saw some flaws, it really looked lovely and tasted great! It was definitely my most challenging feat in the kitchen, and so far my greatest success!
My cooking tragedies
No major tragedies, but there must be something about me that kills yeast, because I have no luck with yeast breads. I make the ugliest pie crust in the world, but it tastes good, so I guess that's not a total failure... Oh, I do tend to burn things...I'm usually multi-tasking, so I always forget about something until the smoke detectors start blaring.
