Bake Sale Lemon Bars

Reviewed: May 15, 2008
Update: this were alot better after they stayed in the frig overnight. Made for a Cake Walk today in our school carnival. Original review: Good taste--- but as for presentation, they look "fluffier" in everyone else's pic, mine stayed very flat, almost more crust than lemon filling. Also, the end directions are somewhat confusing---how can you let cool on a wire rack before cutting into squares? I let cool in the pan, then stuck in the frig.

Yogurt Biscuits

This was an excellent recipe! I love the use of yogurt in this, it made a very soft but workable dough. The taste was really good, too, reminded me a scone.

Tilapia with Creamy Sauce

Reviewed: May 15, 2008
This was way too lemony. If I make again, I will cut the lemon way down, maybe by a 1/4, and the dill by 1/2.

This was ok, not our favorite. Made into bread sticks. Definitely needs some rise time.

Caraway Dill Bread

Reviewed: May 12, 2008
Very good loaf! This loaf rose REALLY high, I started in BM & finished in oven. I didn't add the parsley to this (found I was out of dried & our parsley in our garden has died ): ). I loved the combination of caraway & dill! Ate this w/ tomato soup, so yummy!

New Orleans Barbeque Shrimp

Reviewed: May 11, 2008
Truly amazing! I love BBQ shrimp. My husband made me a seafood dinner last night for Mother's Day, so I had about 1/2 a lb. of leftover shrimp to make something with. I cut the recipe in half & I made about 3 changes to the recipe: didn't have beer, subbed cooking sherry, did 1/2 butter & 1/2 EVOO, and I had to use fresh basil instead of dried (added the fresh basil to the sauteeing garlic and butter). Served with crushy French bread and I was in heaven! This is a great recipe, delish!!!!!

San Antonio Salad

I love this salad! Have made many times! Thanks for the post! The only change I make is to layer the ingredients instead of mixing all together. I love the addition of chips in this.

Fudgy Chocolate Chip Muffins

Reviewed: May 8, 2008
One word: Brownie. That is how I would describe these, and if they were called "Brownie Muffins", they would be perfectly named. The stayed flat (like other reviewers mentioned). The taste was good, but again, very much like a brownie! I like brownies so I very much enjoyed these. My sons thought they had died and gone to heaven because they got brownies in muffin shapes for breakfast. For the applesauce, I subbed 1/4 cup oil, and because the batter was very thick, added a 1/4 cup milk. Otherwise, followed the recipe.

Cabbage Fat-Burning Soup

Reviewed: May 6, 2008
Update: Everyone loved this! I had people asking to take home the leftovers. Thanks for the post, it was perfect! Original review:This isn't something I would normally make but my co-workers and I are participating in a 'Biggest Loser' challenge and I am providing the soup for our luncheon tomorrow. I tasted a little of the broth and was surprised at how good this is! Will update on how they liked it....

Chocolate Oatmeal Cookies

Reviewed: May 4, 2008
Rated by my 9 year old: YUMMY! These are the best. We didn't have chocolate chips or raisins. They are warm & chocolatey! Mom's note: Accidently forgot the baking pwdr in the first batch but they turned out! Family really enjoyed, thanks! PS Did not add the cinnamon as I thought that would be a weird addition.

Popovers

Reviewed: Apr. 27, 2008
My mom used to make popovers for us. I did an experiment with this recipe, based on a popover recipe a friend from England gave me. I put a dallop of mashed potatoes in 3 of them before baking. Actually those "opened up" and looked more like the popovers I grew up with...the others stayed closed and looked like muffins. The taste was good but I am not sure what I did wrong to get the muffin-like appearance. Good base recipe, any good cook has a popover recipe in their file box, IMO! Thanks for the post!

Beaten Biscuits

Reviewed: Apr. 23, 2008
This recipe didn't work very well for me. Maybe I didn't beat the dough enough...anyway, the dough didn't rise and the biscuits were rather flat. The taste was good, but I was expecting these amazingly fluffy biscuits. BTW, my husband thinks I am a complete nut for trying this recipe. I think his comment was "Just make regular biscuits!" as I was beating the tar out of these. Thanks for letting me try something different. Wish I had a biscuit brake like they just to use, I saw one once in a tour of an old Southern home. PS Did not use the lard, used real butter instead.

Country Banana Bread

Reviewed: Apr. 22, 2008
I have made this bread several times, I don't use as much oil (only 1/3 cup) and I add about 3/4 cup of water. Posted photo I only had 2 bananas. It is a really quick fix for banana bread/cake, and is a good way to use up those brown bananas! Used with Satiny Chocolate Glaze from this site.

Satiny Chocolate Glaze

Reviewed: Apr. 22, 2008
I followed another reviewer's suggestions about using the mircowave and it worked out great! I used 3 semi-sweet baking squares of chocolate instead of the chips. It could have been a tiny bit sweeter...next time I might up the corn syrup a little. I didn't make for a bundt cake, used with the Country Banana Bread from this site.

Homemade Bagels

Reviewed: Apr. 20, 2008
I wanted to use my tried and true bagel recipe from this site (bread machine bagels), but I lost my printed copy. I got on here to find it and decided to try a different bagel recipe. So many to choose from, alot of bagel recipes on this site! Anyway, I halved the recipe (except for the egg yolk) and only got 4 bagels out of this recipe. I cheated a little and used my bread machine to mix the dough. I do like the Bread Machine Bagels a bit better, thanks for letting me try different a recipe! The dough had a really nice consistency to work with. Not too sure about using an egg yolk in bagels...the texture was not as dense as I would have liked. My son loved them, however, but I think I will stick with the BMB on this site!

Savory Bubble Bread

Reviewed: Apr. 20, 2008
I am not sure what I did wrong, but the ratio of liquid to flour in this recipe seems way off. The dough was terribly gooey. I had to throw it out, sorry. Might try again at some point, not sure.

Tortilla Pinwheels

Reviewed: Apr. 19, 2008
5 stars! Thanks for the quick and easy lunch. I used chives from our garden, and they went really well with the other ingredients. I really liked the chive/black olive combination. I am going to keep this recipe for a quick appetizer for luncheons. (I did scale the recipe for the filling to only 2 tortillas).

Homemade Noodles

Reviewed: Apr. 19, 2008
Ok...I am so undecided as how to rate this. It is a very old fashioned recipe, and I respect that. However, it seemed to me the directions were very vague, as if you were giving someone the directions who is famaliar with the recipe and had seen it done a 100 times. I have never seen homemade noodles made so I was totally lost! The jelly roll suggestion totally threw me off. I had read the reviews and followed what people were suggesting like adding milk to the recipe (my dough was VERY dry, even with a little milk added)...anyway, my noodles turned out a lot like dumplings except long and thin. They tasted like dumplings, too. Which is not bad, I liked the taste of the dish, but I think I will stick with my tried and true method of chicken and dumplings.

Corn Muffin Pancakes

Reviewed: Apr. 19, 2008
Made for breakfast this early morn (I actually went to the store last week and bought corn muffin mix so I could try this recipe). My 9 year old said this recipe was a "4 1/2" (: which is high praise from him. I used the Jiffy corn muffin mix, which was 8.5 oz, not 7, so I reduced the flour a bit. I loved the submitter's suggestion of using other mixes...lends to alot of variety with this recipe! Can't wait to try other variations! Thanks for the post!
