About this Cook
My favorite family cooking traditions
Verna (my mom) is more of the frozen dinner type, so all this "cooking" business is completely new to me. However, both my gramas cook, and my Grama T had a cookbook of her favorite recipes that she was known for. She made great Jewish noodles, cookies, and sweet rolls. She made her sweet rolls for the 5K/10K the family used to host, and I'm sure that's why half the people were there to run so early in the morning! I didn't used to enjoy the cooking process, it was a means to an end, but the more I cook, the more I love to experiment and try new things. It's a great new way to express some creativity, and hopefully I am starting to follow my both my gramas cooking traditions.

Grilled 'Fusion' Pork Chops
We loved this recipe! I made changes for what I had on hand- lemon juice instead of lime and fresh ginger and garlic, and we broiled it since it was snowing too hard to grill outside. We ate it with some curry apple chutney a friend made for us, and it was amazingly good! It was also fast and easy to make, so bonus points there. Thanks for the recipe!

Pecan Sandies
This is the second year I have made these for Christmas gifting. They are the best cookies ever! They make about one million cookies, so be prepared to share or eat a bunch yourself. This year I passed them out with homemade hot chocolate that I had flavored with powdered amaretto flavored creamer. I put about 1 1/2 T. of the creamer into the cookies as well and it turned out mighty tasty. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go eat some more cookies...

Hot Cocoa Mix in a Jar
This recipe was okay as is, but I thought it was a lot better with a few changes. I did the recipe as written, but using amaretto flavored creamer, and it was okay but not sweet or chocolatey enough for me, and a bit chalky. I dumped in a bunch more powdered sugar (3/4 to 1 c?), maybe 1/2 c or so more chocolate milk mix, and 1/4 c. more cocoa powder. That made it more flavorful and thick-tasting. The powdery taste was my own fault for not getting the water hot enough on my first taste test. I used much hotter water the second time around and it cut down on the chalky. With the changes I felt much better about giving this as gifts. The amaretto flavor was a tasty addition, and I think using the wal-mart brand chocolate milk mix made the flavor stronger like another reviewer had mentioned. Overall, it was tasty and worth making. Thanks!
