About this Cook
Howdy! Born and raise in South Carolina, I am true to my roots with one exception my cooking. I come from a long line of good ole southern cooks. Flour it... Fry it! Boil it... Fat back it! I taught my self to cook for the most part. My Momma taught me about baking more than anything else. My Grandmothers taught me the "Ole Timey" ways. My uncle, aunts and friends taught me "City Cooking". Believe it or not we have vegans here too. I myself practiced being a vegan for 7 years. Being a hairdresser I learned new things everyday. When you enjoy cooking you talk cooking. It also helps keep your clients from talking about controverial things like religion, politics.... I am no longer able to work so I find new ideas about cooking entertaining. My family may not enjoy it as much as I do but they still eat.
My favorite things to cook
It is hard to say what is my favorite thing to cook. Baking calms me. Grilling reminds me of days gone by. Frying .... true southerner. I guess my favorite would have to be the satisfaction my family recieves. I love to bring joy and happiness to those I love. I really like foreign receipes and spices. Things like Hummus, Stuffed Grape Leaves, Tabouli... Spices like GARLIC, lemon, parsley, oregano, cayenne pepper, cajun seasonings, creole seasoning..... Spicy is my thing!
My favorite family cooking traditions
Thanksgiving.... Granny's dressing receipe made with homemade breads, giblets, oysters... and the rest I won't tell. Christmas... My Grandmothers wieners made with a sauce made from homemade jam. 4th of July... My Daddy cooking all night long whole hogs, fresh hams, chickens..... I even remember going to slaughters as a child. Yes, I have tried Chitlins, I won't do that again!
My cooking triumphs
When my Momma started insisting that I do all the baking because she taught me so well that I did it better than her. My biggest triumph is that when I cook I put a little part of all my love ones that are no longer with me and the ones that are still with me. I dedicate my cooking to the Lord who has given me the gifts of daily life and my family and friends who have inspired me. I will see them again soon in Heaven.
My cooking tragedies
The first time I cooked rice, gravy, biscuits and fried chicken. My late husband laughed so hard and I cried so much... even tragedies bring back some good memories.
