After-Thanksgiving Turkey Soup

Reviewed: Nov. 27, 2009
5 stars with the following small changes: reduce to 1/2 c flour and 1/4c butter. Used skim milk instead of cream or 1/2&1/2...and it came out just fine! I also used brown rice instead of white. Added more celery, carrots, mushrooms. Added extra turkey than what I took off the frame. I thought It turned out to be an excellent soup, and even low fat with the above changes. Yum.

Turkey-Lentil Chili

Reviewed: Nov. 14, 2009
This was very good and fast. I made it just as written with only one change: adding carrots. One piece of advice: next time I will brown the sausage by itself and drain it well, before adding onions and celery. I didn't get a chance to drain it and it was quite greasy around the edges. The flavor was great. Even my picky husband, 3 and 5 year old ate some. I will make this one again for sure.

Caramel Popcorn Balls

Reviewed: Nov. 1, 2009
Using 3 bags of micro butter pop corn worked perfect. We couldn't find our candy thermometer, but just heated to soft ball stage (which you get to rather quickly) and that worked fine. Thanks!

Cheesy Vegetable Chowder

Reviewed: Sep. 13, 2009
I loved this recipe for using the abundance of garden veggies in a way my picky kids might eat them (3 and 5years). I only made a few small changes: I sauted the onion, celery, carrot first, then added the water. I did use 1/2 chicken stock, 1/2 water with 3 bouillion cubes. I added extra veggies: broccoli, bell pepper, used fresh sweet corn, peas, beans and carrots. I used real cheddar cheese. It was a hit in my family! Thanks

Soft Oatmeal Cookies

Reviewed: Feb. 22, 2009
These tasted really good. I made just like the recipe, but added dried cranberries and chocolate chips. I used butter flavored crisco, instead of butter. My only complaint was that the dough was really crumbly and hard to form into balls. The baked cookie stays together well though. The crumbliness might be my own fault for skipping the refrigeration time. Next time, I would put them in the fridge like the recipe and see if they are less crumbly. Thanks!

The Best Bean and Ham Soup

Reviewed: Feb. 8, 2009
Excellent! I've been making bean and ham soup for years, but wanted to try a different recipe. This recipe is truely "the best". I stuck to the recipe, except I didn't have veg. broth and used a combination of chicken broth and water. oh, and I added some barley and lentils too. The flavor and the consistency is perfect. Thank you!!

Sweet and Sour Pork III

This was so easy and a great meal! I cheated and used left over cooked pork loin that I chopped and added to the sauce, but it turned out great. My 4 year old had 3rds! Thank you!

Herb, Garlic and Bacon Pork Loin

Reviewed: Jan. 12, 2009
This was really good. I did briefly brine and then brown the pork loin. Every thing else unchanged. It was extremely moist and yummy. My kids age 2 and 4 asked for seconds. That says it all.

Mexican Soup

Reviewed: Jan. 10, 2009
This was just ok. Even after I added garlic, chili powder, onion powder, extra broth, cheese...it was just really bland, even though I love all the ingredients and usually love tortilla soup, this just didn't taste as good.

No Name Orange Roughy

This recipe gets points for being quick and easy. It was pretty good. I also reserved the liquid from the tomatoes so it wasn't so soupy. I would make it again for a quick, healthy dinner.

Macaroni and Cheese with Caramelized Onions and Bacon

Reviewed: Dec. 3, 2008
This tasted pretty good, but was quite greasy. I loved the onions and bacon. It did take a long time to make, considering it is macaroni and cheese.

Lamb and Winter Vegetable Stew

Reviewed: Nov. 30, 2008
Excellent! Even my 2 year old ate an entire bowl. My anti-vegetable-husband would've liked it even more if he hadn't witnessed me cutting up the squash. I used venison and did double the broth. I also added a couple cubes of beef boullion. This is a keeper for sure!

Chicken Breasts with Balsamic Vinegar and Garlic

I was thrilled to find this recipe on a week night at 5:30 with no idea for supper, and chicken that needed to be cooked. This was a delicious, quick meal for our family...my husband and my 2 small children wanted seconds! SUCCESS! I cooked it as is. served over brown rice. so simple, and so delicious.

Best Beer Cheese Soup

Reviewed: Nov. 16, 2008
This was a delicious, quick meal! I had left over bacon already cooked, so that made it even easier. I didn't think it tasted too much like beer, but just right. Even my 2 and 4 year olds and even pickier husband liked it! I used 3 cups chicken broth and 1 can beer. next time, I will use both cans of beer. My husband took half of the soup and ran it thru the food processor and added some sour cream because he wanted it smooth and more creamy. Either way tasted pretty good. A quick tasty dinner. Will make this again for sure!

Portobello Mushroom Stroganoff

Reviewed: Nov. 2, 2008
This is a 5 star recipe with modifications suggested by Cookingirllj: -add 1clove garlic to onion. -Add dash of soy sauce and worcestershire sauce. -reduce sour cream to 1/2c. -use beef broth instead of veggie I also added about 1/4 c red wine to the broth while it was reducing. I used combination of oyster, portabello and other mushrooms. I ended up adding a bit more broth and wine at the end because it was too thick. But in the end it turned out yummy. Even my picky husband went back for seconds. :-)

Boilermaker Tailgate Chili

Reviewed: Oct. 7, 2008
Excellent! I modified to reduce the spiciness for my kids (less hot sauce, chiles etc), replaced one can of chili beans with one can of black beans and it was really, really good! I did end up adding some pureed pineaple as someone suggested to further tame it down for my children and it worked great! This recipe is a definate keeper!

Even though I ommitted the spicy hot ingredients so that my toddlers would eat it, this was still pretty yummy. The ingredient list is long, but mostly spices so goes together quickly.
