My family moved to Malaysia in 2004. We are here for another year. I have to say that the food here is absolutely the best anywhere. From Indian Satays, to Chinese/Malay hawker food to wonderful Thai curries, we eat great. We moved into a fabulous apartment that has a terrific gourmet kitchen. It looks like one of those kitchens in the movies where everything is stainless and spacious. I am having a blast cooking in it. We can get most foods here. We do miss good American hotdogs though.
My favorite things to cook
I love to try my hand at creative salads and soups. We are doing the South Beach Diet, and it ain't easy doing an American diet in a Southeast Asian country.
I especially love to bake. Cookies and quickbreads are my favorites. I love large quantity cooking as we do entertain quite a bit too.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I have old letters and books handed down from old matrons of my family. I actually was going through an old book and found a hand written recipe for the wedding cake my husbands great-grandmother served at her wedding! I have classics like Mexican Chorizo, from my grandmother. It is unlike any other I have tasted anywhere. I hope to pass these recipes down to my grandkids someday.
My cooking triumphs
I catered a Mexican Christmas Fiesta last December for about 150 here in Penang. Most of our guests had never tasted Mexican food before. Our Muslim guests were quite stymied. Our Chinese guests didn't really appreciate the refried beans and they went for the rice instead. Our Western friends were in seventh heaven tasting food from home again. Mexican foods are hard to get here and I bring corn tortillas back with me after each trip to the States.
My cooking tragedies
Last Thanksgiving I had to make 6 batches of rolls. The first 3 batches I made didn't rise as the yeast was old. I spent hours and hours on that fiasco.
