I didn't know much about cooking when I lived with my parents, because they pretty much did all the cooking. All I knew was how to fry an egg and make mac and cheese from a box.
When I moved in with my husband, I picked up the basics of cooking by watching him. When I felt more comfortable in the kitchen, I decided I was ready to try other recipes, rather than just the standard spaghetti and sauce or grilled cheese sandwiches, so I read cookbooks, and I searched the web for recipes and I came across this site. It's definitly been a big help.
My favorite things to cook
My husband's version of jambalaya. He doesn't measure anything, just tosses, pours, sprinkles, shakes whatever seasoning he uses, so of course, I have to do the same when I make it. The results are always slighty different and always delicious. It's a fun meal to make.
My favorite family cooking traditions
The turkey dinners at Thanksgiving and Christmas with family are always a great time for food, though I've never actually participated in the cooking part, just the eating.
My cooking triumphs
The third time I made spinach and mushroom quiche. I was so thrilled that I had made something that turned out so good that I couldn't wait to make it again.
My cooking tragedies
Spring rolls, which I will never attempt again until I actually watch someone make it or at least until I get the proper equipment, like a deep fryer. First I made a huge mess in the kitchen by knocking over the measuring cup which bounced off the floor, splattering it's contents of soy sauce all over the room. Then the won ton wrappers that I used kept breaking open when frying in the sputtering, popping oil. After probably a few hours of work in the kitchen, I had made a greasy, burnt disaster.
