Apple Pie by Grandma Ople
Mmmmm pie
Easy Herb Roasted Turkey
About this Cook
I was born in small town Alberta, Canada where I was raised on good ol' meat and potatoes (gotta love Alberta beef!). Good food has always been a part of my life. Growing up, my mom, grandma, and I enjoyed cooking together, and I have many fond memories of cooking and baking with them. My mom always makes great comfort food, and always made our family the dishes we requested- even when she didn't like them! She hates lasagne, but somehow managed to make the best lasagne ever. Now that I live in San Diego, I've been introduced to the world of Mexican food, and am loving it! I hated cilantro when I first moved here- but aquired the taste, and now I actually crave it all the time.
My favorite things to cook
I love experimenting, and my boyfiend Shawn is a willing guinea pig. In the summer, I'm all about the grill, and in the winter, I love those great comfort foods and pasta. My favorite kinds of food to make are ones that I just make up on the spot. I find the challenge of making something from what I have in the kitchen brings out the creativity in me! I love asian food, mexican, and pastas.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Growing up, my grandparents had a farm. In harvest time, the men would spend all day out in the fields, and us girls would be in the kitchen, cooking up lunch, dinner, and snacks. We would bring the prepared food out to the field and eat it out there. I loved eating in that field while watching the sunset!
My cooking triumphs
I've had a few! My first Thanksgiving cooking for 15 people in 2007 was a great success! Making homemade potstickers with a hot chili sauce. It was very time consuming- but was so delicious. Also, cooking for a staff party at our house for 25 people. I stressed because I wanted everything to be perfect- and I was so relieved when everyone loved it!
My cooking tragedies
The biscuits! I made some biscuits once, and I think the baking powder was bad. They were tough and tasted like chewing on flour. Shawn said they tasted like playdough! Its now a running joke in our house...

Dark Chocolate Bacon Cupcakes
My boyfriend's favorite foods include chocolate and bacon, but when I told him I wanted to make these he said "No Way!" Well, he's out of town, coming back tonight, and I made them and they're great! Well, I'm the only one who's tasted them so far, but I thought the flavours went really well together, and the cupcake itself is very moist. The recipe was very easy, the most time consuming part was cutting up the bacon, which I wanted to do before hand to make the pieces really small. Wish me luck when my boyfriend tastes it! *UPDATE* Well, I have to say although I loved these cupcakes at first, the second day they tasted a little "meaty" but not in a good way. They were tasty when eaten just after they cooled. My boyfriend thought they were disgusting. I took them to work, and one person wouldn't try it, one person really liked it, and another said it was "just ok". So, three stars it is, for being adventurous but not being all that great. I'm gonna try to make it without the bacon.

Cowboy Cookie Mix in a Jar
Great Recipe... although I didn't eat them- I gave them away as gifts. You DO have to put the ingredients in backwards, thanks for the tips. One person I gave them to said "best cookie ever"

Apple Pie by Grandma Ople
It's true. This Apple pie rocks my world. I made it last night and followed it to a "t" with the exception of sprinkling a good amt of cinnamon and a little nutmeg in with the apples. I used 2 GIANT apples from my friend's tree and that was enough to fill the pie. I poured the caramel mixture over the lattice crust then brushed it for more even coverage. It turned out amazing, the way the caramel flavors the crust is just awesome. The only thing was my bottom crust was a little soggy but that's not the recipe's fault. I will bake the bottom a little before putting the apples in next time. Thank you so much for this recipe!
