Cooking and Diving! Hurray!
About this Cook
My real job is working at a credit union, while paying some of the bills working as a scuba instructor. I live with my amazing dog Penny the black labrador who will also eat anything in her bowl- or on the counter, for that matter.
My favorite things to cook
I was a vegetarian for 16 years, before converting back to omnivore about a year ago. I'll try anything once, but I am a much better cook than baker. I hate measuring, most of the time I just eyeball it and get away with it.
My favorite family cooking traditions
A few holiday seasons ago, I pulled out my mother's cooking boxes and made the various newspaper clippings and faded recipe cards into new 4 by 6 cards. These included all of the recipes that she had collected over the years and what I had remembered from being a child, as well as all the special recipes from special occasions. I bought three of the binders designed to be recipe books and made copies for myself and my sister- as well as returning all of my mother's recipes to her in the original form in one of the books. I added a lot of blank cards at the back, and I hope they are filling them in as we find new keepers- hopefully my sister and I can hold on to these books for our children.
My cooking triumphs
Sushi. We eat a great deal of what we lovingly refer to as "Eugene Sushi"- I was lucky enough to have lived with a fabulous Japanese woman for three years, and she taught me a great deal about cooking. Other good stuff is anything grilled or steamed veggie dish- including curries, stir-fry, and oven roasted anything. My boyfriend and I also make really good salads and dressings.
My cooking tragedies
I've been known to leave chicken on the stove unattended for several HOURS. Ummm. Hockey Pucks.

Alfredo Sauce
Yum. Made as written with addition of 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg and some white pepper. Tasty and delicious, the cheese did fine melting in since it was in tiny chunks from the food processor. Served with steamed brocolli. Appreciate not having to use egg. Hurray for heart-attack food at home! Thanks!

Peppy's Pita Bread
Yummmm... tasty and delicious. For the reviewer who followed the recipe to the t and ended up with crackers- it probably wasn't the recipe so much as using a bad batch of yeast. It's a living thing, only the stuff that is alive will make the dough poof.

Stef's Super Cheesy Garlic Bread
I had chedder and swiss cheese, so that's what I used. Man, is this bread tasty! Rave reviews from the dinner party that was over also. Thanks!
