About this Cook
My favorite things to cook
Planning a meal is half the fun for me. I love to make a recipe that's new or a little bit involved. Ultimately, I seem to have the most success with pastas, homemade pizza and salad. I want to get better with healthy foods that don't sacrifice flavor.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Every year or two my mother would bring the family to visit her home in Germany. We'd spend a month or so with my grandmother, who was a fantastic cook and home-maker. I have strong memories of feeling nurtured by her hot cocoa in the mornings and schnitzel and dumplings with gravy, delicious tomato salad or cucumber salad, cherries she had canned from the back yard or a delicious cake with homemade whipped cream for dessert. I've started to try to learn to cook in the last few years, mostly because I just love to eat. I hope if I ever have a family of my own I will be as good as she was at creating rituals around home and mealtime.

Best Tuna Casserole
TIP: Keep it all in one pot - saute the onion and celery in butter in a dutch oven on the stovetop, then stir in the frozen peas so they thaw, add the rest of the ingredients and put in the oven. For extra flavor saute some minced garlic and diced carrots with the onions and celery. Make it healthier by adding extra healthy ingredients (you can fit the volume if you're using the dutch oven rather than the 13x9 pan). I added 2 cups steamed broccoli, extra noodles, extra tuna and skim milk to make the whole mass of ingredients stirable.

German Brotchen Rolls
THANK YOU!!!! When I was little and we visited my Oma in bavaria, she would send me next door to the baker to get rolls for breakfast. They were so unbelievably good with butter and honey and a cup of warm chocolade milch. I have never had anything like them in America. These are them! Thank you thank you thank you!!!!!!

Boilermaker Tailgate Chili
Made this in my big dutch oven and it literally nearly overflowed - I ended up having to pour it into an extra pot. I also made it way too spicy, which may have been my fault, because I added a special mexican type of chili powder. Be aware that you might want to add half the amount of chili at first, and adjust to taste. Ultimately, however, still thought it was a classic, delicious flavor.
