Over coffee and the morning paper, I drifted off into a stray thought about Allrecipes. It happens. And this morning it happened as I was reading about a Harvard professor* who’s suggesting that cooking was the driving force that propelled us from pre-human into the realm of fully human.… MORE

1.How do you like your eggs? Scrambled in a Slacker (props to The Dish, Fremont) or set beside chicken-fried steak!  (see answer #3.) 2. How do you take your coffee/tea? “I wanna see it painted black/black as night/black as coal.” 3. Favorite breakfast food:  Chicken-fried st MORE

If you were to ask me who was the guardian of my family’s overall nutrition back when I was growing up, the answer would’ve been easy: Mom, of course. Who else could it have been, dad? Not likely. Dad had a masters in engineering and still couldn’t operate the microwave.   In my family,… MORE

Actually, this is a food-in-the-news blog posting. I just read an article in the NYT about applying no-tech fixes to high-tech disasters. Among the advice: if you’ve accidentally (is there any other way?) dropped your cell into the toilet, don’t fret!  It’s salvageable. Just remove MORE

I'm a little confused by the recent news about vitamin pills. They're not really doing what we think they are, studies are showing. Our diets, provided they're balanced, are mostly adequate for supplying the vitamins and nutrients we need. But that's not really why we're loading up with high… MORE

*Update: 2/11/2009*:  A second peanut processing facility owned by the Peanut Corporation of America, the same company that own the plant in Blakely, Georgia, was forced to shut down, according to the NYT today. Previously only one plant had been implicated. But evidence of salmonella was found… MORE

WALL-E will be so relieved. The company that makes Twinkies, the foodlike snack treat, has been teetering on the edge of bankruptcy for the past four years. Who knew? Today, however, the NYT reports the Twinkie has emerged triumphant. The company that employs 22,000 will continue to make… MORE

Is there a limit to the good news that can come out about red wine? We’ve already learned that wine’s antioxidants fight cancer and heart disease, among other things. But the good news just keeps on rolling out. Earlier in the week, I read about Oxford researchers who say that wine, along… MORE

About Me
I live with my wife in the Pacific Northwest.
My favorite things to cook
We lean toward relatively simple dishes that for the most part use fresh local, seasonal ingredients. We haunt the farmer's markets around town.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Not too many really. Gradually, over the years, my wife and I sort of set out on our own, developing our interests together. It's been fun. And filling.
My cooking tragedies
Plenty. I manage to reduce my total number of serious screw-ups by steadfastly refusing to bake.
