A few months ago, I blogged about how I had finally made my first pie crust. I had filled it with a vegetarian quiche, and later cursed myself for not being brave enough to make it earlier! It was so easy, and previously I had made crustless quiches or paid for prepaid crusts at the store.… MORE

I’ll never forget the year when my Mom told me Santa was coming for Thanksgiving. I couldn’t have been in double-digits yet, and obviously, I still believed in Santa. I grew up in a small community on an island in the Pacific Northwest, with two parents who had a knack at making friends and… MORE

There are a few things in life that I just can’t do. Making a pie crust is one of them. Until yesterday, that is! I love baked all goods, pies and quiches included. In the past, I had to resort to buying the frozen prepared crusts. Or, I could resort to making crustless quiches, nowhere near as… MORE

Have you ever made hot chocolate? I mean real hot chocolate, no packets of chocolate-flavored powder or hot water involved? I recently spent a few weeks in the Dominican Republic, and how to make real hot chocolate was one of the things I learned while I was there. Being that it was nearly… MORE

Oh, how I wish I had more than three days to prepare for vacation. I always do this though; life seems to operate in slow motion up until the day before I leave. It’s only then I remember the list of things I really should’ve done a week ago. I will soon switch into high gear, the washer and… MORE

Admittedly, this is a cry for help. My creativity escapes me when it comes to my latest project. So, that’s where you all come in! Let me give you a few details on my venture… In approximately three weeks I am leaving for the Dominican Republic! [Insert my shrill shrieking of excitement here.]… MORE

I have to be honest here. Beets frighten me. I don’t even know why, I'd never even tried one until this week!  Really. I don’t think I’ve ever knowingly ate a beet. My only experience with beets is at a restaurant near my hometown. On every salad plate, a few slices of pickled beet are… MORE

I don’t know what’s got into me! This week I’ve done so many stupid things, it’s become somewhat comical. A few days ago, I stopped at the store because I was running low on conditioner. After standing in front of the mile-long row of shampoos and conditioners for an eternity, I finally… MORE

A few weeks ago, I made a chicken dish for Carlos that he loved. After the first bite, he told me it was so good, would I mind sending the recipe to his mother in Costa Rica? I only speak conversational Spanish, but I thought what the heck, I would try to translate it to English before I sent… MORE

About Me
I love to cook, usually just for my family and friends. I live to eat, not eat to live. I love eating out, trying new things and enjoy when people cook for me! I’ve been a vegetarian for my whole life, but I do sneak the occasional slice of bacon or pepperoni.
My favorite things to cook
My favorite things to cook are usually vegetarian, ethnic, flavorful and rich! Indian, Italian, Thai and Latin American cuisine are on the top of my list. I also have a sweet tooth; cheesecakes, cookies, pies and desserts are a challenge and a treat!
My favorite family cooking traditions
People often wonder where I get my love for cooking--since my Mom does not like to cook and my Dad was always too busy to cook. Perhaps I am a foodie at heart and it was an instinct for survival?
My cooking triumphs
This would have to be Christmas 2007. I cooked the biggest meal I have ever made, all from scratch. Because we knew it was our last Christmas with our Dad, I made all of his favorites, including salmon with creamy dill sauce and scalloped potatoes. I also made a turkey, chicken cordon bleu, sweet potatoes, stuffing, and a green salad. I almost ran out of room in the oven!
My cooking tragedies
This has to be burning food on the grill. I walk away to give something a few more minutes, and when I return I have charcoal!
