Thanksgiving Leftover Casserole

Reviewed: Dec. 3, 2009
We loved this casserole. I tripled the amount of turkey, added garlic powder also, added salt & spices to taste rather than measuring, also added extra potatoes (needed it to really feed 8 hungry people), prepared a box of stove top for the stuffing, & added corn. Rated this 4* because of the portion size being off; I don't think we would have like this very much with only 1 cup of turkey and it wouldn't have fed our whole family. But with the few changes it's a great family recipe.

Teriyaki and Pineapple Chicken

Reviewed: Jul. 14, 2009
What a great recipe! It was easy and very, very good! I served it over rice. I didn't add the mushrooms because I didn't have any but I loved the peppers...not too many for us at all. I used corn starch instead of flour to thicken it. I didn't marinade my chicken...just cooked it on the stove until cooked through and it was very tender and full of flavor. Thanks for the great recipe! PS - my younger son did think it was a little too spicy, so if you have younger children you could watch how much of the crushed pepper you add. But we liked it!

Black Beans and Rice

Reviewed: Jul. 14, 2009
This was just the recipe I was looking for! It's a simple, tasty, quick, recipe for black beans and rice. Honestly, I think all the changes people are making to this recipe are just preference. You should make this recipe as is, then decided what you'd like better...tomatoes, no tomatoes, chicken broth, beef broth...that's what makes it a great recipe, you can add or change ingredients to make it fit your family. Very yummy!

Slow Cooker Chicken Stroganoff

Reviewed: Apr. 7, 2009
Great easy recipe. I doubled it and added just a bit of water to the sauce at the end...it was pretty thick. Added some pepper and served over wide noodles. I did use 1 can of cream of mushroom soup and 1 can of cream of chicken (2 cans because I doubled it). I also only used 1-8oz package of cream cheese and about 1 cup of sour cream. I cut the chicken into cubes, after it was cooked, instead of shreading it...just preference. The chicken was very moist and had a great flavor. My whole family really liked it.

No Bake Chocolate Oat Bars

Reviewed: Dec. 11, 2008
The only reason I'm giving this recipe a 4* instead of 5 is because of the amount of butter. I add 3/4 cup and a little extra oats. And just for preference, I add a little less chocolate chips. I store them in the fridge so they stay firm. They don't last long around my house. Great recipe when you reduce the amount of butter.

Jalapeno Popper Spread

This is so good! I used this recipe for my daughter's graduation party, instead of serving it as a dip I used it as a spread to make tortilla roll-ups. They were gone! Next time I'll make it as the dip. This recipe is a keeper!

The Best Bean and Ham Soup

Reviewed: Dec. 11, 2008
This soup is good, but I have to agree with RobynAnn; the chili powder, Worcestershire sauce, and mustard dominated the flavor of this soup. After it simmered, I added chicken bouillon and a dash of sugar. My family liked the soup...they ate it, but I don't think they'd want me to make it again. I know they wouldn't have liked it at all without the extra bouillon and sugar. Everyone has their different tastes and this soup just isn't a family favorite for us.

Turkey Tetrazzini II

Reviewed: Dec. 7, 2008
Wow! Was I surprised at how good this turned out. The biggest changes I made, which I think are important, I sauteed chopped garlic and onion in the butter. (I also used less butter...about 5-6 tbs). We love garlic, so I used a lot. I also used milk instead of cream and topped it with Italian bread crumbs. I cooked it in a 9x13 pan, covered the last half of baking time. It was so good, and it used up a lot of our leftover turkey! Thanks for this great recipe! (I gave it a 4* because it needs the garlic.)

Poppy Seed Dressing II

Reviewed: Mar. 16, 2008
Some would say the 3/4 cup of sugar makes this dressing much too sweet. I think it's just preference. If you don't want it too sweet, add 1/2 cup sugar and see if you think it needs more. Other than that, it's a fantastic recipe that has us hooked.

Ninety Minute Cinnamon Rolls

Reviewed: Mar. 1, 2008
I've tried a few other cinnamon roll recipes, which were much more difficult and time consuming than these, but these were by far the BEST!! This is a simple recipe that produces an outstanding cinnamon roll. Add the frosting, 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar, 1/2 cup softened margarine, 1/2 tsp vanilla, and 1/8 tsp salt...and it's to die for. I don't have cream cheese but the frosting is good without it. These don't last an hour in my house. I do like to bake 9 of them in a lightly greased round pan and the other 3 in the muffin pans. I've already given this recipe to my sister...who loved them...and my mother...who also loved them. Thanks for the recipe, Debbie. It's a keeper for me.

Grandma VanDoren's White Bread

Reviewed: Feb. 28, 2008
I'd give this recipe 10*'s if I could. It's such an easy recipe with great results each time. I've made it several times, once it didn't rise like it had before, but the bread was still delicious. I use all purpose flour with no problems. I agree with Jan, it does make the best grilled cheese sandwiches...you have to try it. The only thing is once you make this bread for your family they won't let you stop! And it goes fast! Thanks Grandma VanDoren!

Emily's Famous Onion Dip

Reviewed: Feb. 27, 2008
I'm sure there would be a difference if you used sour cream instead of plain yogurt. But that would be defeating the purpose and that's not what this recipe calls for. I think this recipe is great and I'm grateful that it doesn't call for sour cream because I live in Kenya, where you can't get sour cream. Maybe I've been away from the States for a while because this recipe was excellent to me and I don't think you need the sour cream. At least try it with the yogurt first to see if you like it. Thanks, Emily, for the fantastic recipe!

Chewy Granola Bars

Reviewed: Dec. 6, 2007
I was nervous with all the comments about these not sticking together, but I had no problems at all. I did 2/3 cups honey, 7 Tbs. butter (melted), and 1 cup chocolate chips. I mixed the melted butter, vanilla, & honey then added to the other ingredients (I had already mixed the other ingredients together in a bowl). Press down firmly when putting in pan. I let them cool for about an hour then put them in the fridge for another hour. After that I cut them into bars and wrapped them in plastic wrap. I'm also storing them in the fridge. The reason I only gave the recipe a 4* is they are so sweet. I can't imagine using 2 cups of chocolate chips. Plus they aren't as chewy as I would have liked. I think I'll try adding marshmallows and peanut butter next time. It's still a wonderful recipe that I will use again.

Basic Flaky Pie Crust

Reviewed: Nov. 27, 2007
I loved this recipe! It is basic but very, very good. The dough wasn't difficult for me to handle. I put the shortening in the freezer for a short time and made sure my water was very cold also. I did have to add extra water. After I rolled the dough out I used a thin metal spatula to take it off my surface. Very easy!

Broccoli Cheddar Casserole

I made this for Thanksgiving and it wasn't as good as I hoped it would be. It could have been something I did wrong, but it was runny and didn't really have much flavor. I had most of it left over. Not a winner for us.

Deviled Eggs

All the right ingredients but just not the right amounts. With this recipe you'll have to add more mayo and mustard or you'll have some really dry deviled eggs.

Pull-Apart Garlic Buns

Reviewed: Nov. 19, 2007
Being the inexperienced baker that I am (when it comes to baking with yeast) I didn't quite understand the directions. And I'm still not sure if you’re suppose to end up with 12 or 6 rolls after you've put them on top of each other. So what I ended up doing, and it worked out great, is first I proofed my yeast by heating the water in the microwave, then adding the yeast and sugar until it foamed. Then I added the yeast mixture to the flour and salt, and continued to add the other ingredients. I may have used more flour, but the dough was pretty easy to handle. I divided my dough into 8 pieces, put them into a square 9” pan, brushed them with the butter/garlic sauce (forgot to dip them), and let them rise. I also added extra garlic powder and a little garlic salt. Baked them for less time (could have been my oven but I only had them in the over for about 28 minutes). They turned out very soft and my family loved them! I will definitely make these again.

Quick Quiche

Reviewed: Nov. 9, 2007
If it wasn't for this recipe I would have never made quiche! This recipe is easy and it tastes so good. My 12 year old son loves it, as does the rest of the family. You might need to cook it longer than the stated time, but I've never had to broil mine. I make 2 each time using mozzorella cheese and bacon. Trust me, this recipe is amazing!
