I live in the South Plains region of Texas. Born and raised Texan. I have four boys that keep us very, very busy, and eat us out of house and home. Love to cook, but with four active kids and a full time job, don't have a lot of time. My other identities include soccer mom (3 teams), swim mom (2 teams), scout mom, and band mom, of course I am usually referred to as "kids name" mom. My grandmother was a great cook. I also like to make muffins and cookies. Husband loves to cook outside which does not upset me one bit. Growing up my mother did not cook much so I really don't have any cooking traditions that I grew up with. My husband and I work in the kitchen together every Thanksgiving and Christmas and make the special things that my mother-in-law always asks us to bring. He always makes the sweet potatoes. He never makes them the same way twice but you know they have always been good and there are never any leftovers. For my kids birthdays I always make whatever dessert they want for their special day. My third will always pick a pumpkin pie. Any meal I make that the whole family likes. My mother's favorite pie growing up was butterscotch pie, but my grandmother seldom made it for her anymore. So one year I decided to surprise her and make one for Thanksgiving. Found a recipe (not my grandmother's) but did not make one ahead of time to see how it looked or tasted. Big mistake. It was awful, it looked awful and tasted awful. I was so upset.
