About this Cook
I have a wonderful husband. No children but lot's of family, neices, nephews, who are my food critics. I'm the designated family gathering cook. I've been cooking since I was Old enough to stand in a chair. I come from a family of old southern recipe cooks. Cooking is my life. It's therapy for me. When I'm in the kitchen I feel that I'm In my element. My goal is to open an eatery or even start a full service catering venue.
My favorite things to cook
I love to cook different things. My favorite thing to cook are cakes. Any and every cake. I love trying new cake recipes.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Southern down home cooking is the main food in my family. Even though I do venture out into other cultures and dishes.
My cooking triumphs
One of the ministers in my church asked me to cook a German Chocolate Cake for him for Thanksgiving. I did that. And he picked it up. When I went to church the following weekend I was told by different friends and members that I made a cake so good they wanted to know If I had sat in it to make it. I was so elated. So I make cakes for people for different occasions or what. And I get rave reviews. I also make a mean gumbo.
My cooking tragedies
The first time I ever tried to cook a turkey it was a 20 pounder I wanted to impress my dad who came to visit me for my first Thanksgiving dinner. I prep'd the turkey and put it in the oven. I couldn't calculate the cooking time so I guestimated basting every so often during the cooking time, my turkey had a real pretty golden brown texture so I thought it's was time for it to come out of the oven. I had everyting else all prepared and ready to serve when my dad arrived. I proudly asked him to carve the turkey. As he started carving, the part where he was cutting was pink and the deeper he cut the more pink it got until he realized the turkey was not done all the way through. I was so embarrassed. My dad put the turkey back into the oven and showed me how to cook and test for doneness. The turkey finished cooking my other family members arrived later. I'm glad my dad was there first. We never told anyone. Well not until well later on in the years.
