I am interested in just about everything. I love learning new things -- that sums me up in a nutshell.
My favorite things to cook
Traditional, quick, easy Mexican dishes as I learned how to cook from my childhood friend's father, who was a caterer. Their family immigrated from Jalisco so I consider myself fortunate to have learned their traditions first hand.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I love traditional Milwaukee food as my great-grandmother used to make: butterhorns, schaumtorte, potato pancakes, bologna with noodles, German potato salad (Sentry's was the BEST!), apple knugen, rouladen, etc.
My cooking triumphs
When I was about nine years old, I got home from school (latch key kid) and had a huge craving for boiled potato (how Irish is that). So, with no supervision, I hauled out the pot, boiled the water, and ten minutes later, I'd finished cooking by myself for the first time! My mom was so surprised when she got home from work!
My cooking tragedies
The greatest tragedy is not having spent more time in the kitchen with my great-grandmother. Even though I watched her religiously every time we cooked "together" in the kitchen, once I hit my 'teens, I should have had her show me some things. Now most of those recipes are gone!
