Marinade for Chicken

Reviewed: Jul. 20, 2009
I'm undecided on this rating. I personally wasn't thrilled with it, but the hubby and kids liked it, so I'm giving it four stars, but I think this is being generous. :) The chicken was very moist (I think this is what the kids liked about it), but I thought the taste wasn't anything to rave about. I did reduce the oil to make it healthier, but I don't think that would have affected the flavor too much. Maybe it would have been better without the Worchestershire sauce??? I probably won't make it again unless the kids personally request it.

Blueberry Salad

Reviewed: Jul. 20, 2009
This recipe is delicious! To save calories, I skip the cream cheese topping and just top with Cool Whip. NOTE: The posted photos for this recipe (and some of the reviews) are NOT for this particular recipe. Both photos feature a pie with a crust. WRONG!!! This is a jello with blueberry pie filling and crushed pineapple in the jello, then topped with a white cream cheese topping. People, please make sure you are reviewing the correct recipes and posting the correct photos.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough + Cupcake = The BEST Cupcake. Ever.

Reviewed: Jul. 12, 2009
The novelty of these cupcakes deserves a 5-star rating, but I don't think the taste was a 5-star. I made the recipe as stated but did use a chocolate fudge cake mix because I wanted the color contrast. I froze the cookie balls for about four hours and had no problems at all with the cookie melting away. I did cook them for about 16 minutes but probably should have cooked them a tad longer as some of the tops caved in and were a little wet/doughy on top. Not a big deal because I frosted them with the Rich Chocolate Frosting from this site and you couldn't tell. I'd definitely make these again - the kids thought they were really cool.

Reheating Pasta

Reviewed: Jun. 30, 2009
OK, I don't see the huge timesaver here. What takes so much time is bringing the water to a boil. With the reheating part, you're bringing the water to a boil a second time. In my opinion, you're better off just to boil the pasta when you need it.

Baked Teriyaki Chicken

Reviewed: Jun. 27, 2009
No huge wow factor for me, but it was very simple and low-fat which scores points for me. I followed the measurements exactly but used boneless skinless chicken tenders instead, and there was plenty of sauce. All kids ate it without complaint, but they didn't compliment it either. I'll probably make it again sometime when I need a quick meal.

Slow Cooker Italian Beef for Sandwiches

Reviewed: Jun. 27, 2009
As written, this was just too bland for me. I ending up using 3 packets of italian dressing mix and upping the measurements on all other seasonings(except salt). Because it was so simple and tender, I will try it again, but next time I will use beef broth instead of water and add some chopped pepperoncinis to the slow cooker to spice it up.

Grain and Nut Whole Wheat Pancakes

Reviewed: Jun. 15, 2009
Yummm! Just what I was hoping for. I like to sneak in healthy alternatives for my kids (11, 8, 5) whenever possible. But, to be honest, I'm not usually very successful, especially when it comes to whole grains. They always notice and not in a positive way. :) But, not with this one. While they all three immediately detected this was not their usual "white flour, loaded with chocolate chips pancake recipe", all three immediately responded with an, "Ummm, these are really good." Each of them gobbled them up, and when asked if they'd want me to make them again, they all said "yes." That makes this a grand slam, worthy of 5 stars, in my book. The only alterations I made was adding a splash of vanilla and a sprinkling of cinnamon. I also omitted the nuts to make them more kid-friendly, but I think I might even be able to sneak them by them next time around. Great recipe!!!!! Oh, did I mention, that I absolutely loved them? - just as good as IHOP's. Also, not sure why other reviewer's think they are dry. Mine were extremely moist.

Chocolate Chip Banana Muffins

Reviewed: Jun. 11, 2009
Not bad, but nothing spectacular. Nice banana flavor and very moist. Kids each ate one and said they were good. The rest, however, sat on the counter for two more days until I finally pitched them. I guess they were good enough to eat, but not good enough to go back for seconds. :)

Chili Dog Casserole II

Reviewed: Jun. 1, 2009
This was a big hit with hubby and all three kids. I made a large batch of homemade coney dog sauce and used that instead of canned chili. It was delicious - so much better than I expected!!!! Like other reviewers, I boiled the hotdogs first before rolling them in the tortillas. FYI: I used the small taco size tortillas with regular size hotdogs and they were perfect. I'm really glad I gave this recipe a try - I'll definitely be making it again.

Grandpa's Classic Coney Sauce

Reviewed: Jun. 1, 2009
TIP: If you want the meat to have a very fine texture, boil it in water. Place the ground beef in a saucepan, cover with water and slow boil until the meat is brown. You will know when it is done. Sounds very strange and looks very unappetizing, but this is how you get the right texture.

Easy Chocolate Chip Pound Cake

Reviewed: May 21, 2009
Not impressed by this one. Delivers on the "easy" part of the name, so I'm giving this 3 stars, but I didn't care for the taste or texture. There are so many other good dessert recipes out there that I wouldn't bother making this one again. If you want to jazz up a yellow cake mix, try the Honey Bun Cake recipe on this site instead.

Ukrainian Apple Cake (Yabluchnyk)

Reviewed: May 14, 2009
I made four of these for my son's school project on Russia. I sampled the cake immediately after baking it and was not impressed. It was dry, not very flavorful and hard to cut through the apples. Fortunately, however, there was way too much food brought in to school, so my son brought home some leftovers. Let me just say, this cake definitely improves with age!!!! On day 2, the cake was so moist and flavorful, and the apples softened nicely which made for easier cutting. Yummmmm!!!! I think I've gained 5 pounds. If you're looking for a simple dessert, that's not overly sweet and has a nice presentation, try this one. I followed the recipe exactly, using a mix of Granny Smith and Jonagold apples. I baked two cakes for 35 minutes and the other two a little longer. Next time I'll stick with 35 minutes. They were just right.

The Whole Jar of Peanut Butter Cookies

Reviewed: May 14, 2009
The peanut butter cookies I grew up with (and my mom still makes)are crispy, so the soft, creamy texture of this cookie was a change for me. My mom's cookie probably beats this one out on taste (although this recipe is really tasty itself), but I personally prefer the soft texture of this one. I would definitely make these again. I doubled the recipe and got 9 dozen medium-sized cookies. Be careful not to overbake - that's key to the soft texture. I baked for 10 minutes and they were perfect.

Honey Baked Chicken II

Reviewed: May 5, 2009
Sorry, but we just did not care for this. I was really disappointed - the sauce was really tasty before I added it to the chicken and baked it. Once it was cooked, however, not so good! In all fairness, I have never cooked with curry, so maybe that was it. I'm surprised though because I like Indian food and I like all of the spices that comprise curry powder. Anyway, I was almost embarrassed to serve this meal because I knew nobody would like it - I mean I wasn't even willing to eat it. I served it with BBQ sauce on the side and that helped get it down. Three stars for ease of preparation and to compensate for the fact that maybe we just don't like curry.

Sarge's EZ Pulled Pork BBQ

Reviewed: May 5, 2009
OMG - this was awesome! I followed the recipe as written and added a few more spices of my own - garlic salt, smoky paprika, liquid smoke and some cajun seasoning. My intentions were to make BBQ (sauce)sandwiches, but the meat was so tender, juicy and tasty that we ended up eating the meat by itself! It would have been a shame to cover up the taste with sauce! After 8 hours of cooking, the meat was tender enough to eat, but we had a baseball game and nobody wanted to eat before we left. So I kept it cooking for another 4 hours and that made a huge difference - I couldn't even pick it up - the meat fell right off the bones. I will definitely make this again. I might even try adding sauce some time - but maybe not!

Simple Chicken Parmesan

Reviewed: Apr. 30, 2009
Not bad, but not the best I've ever had. Followed the recipe exactly. Neither hubby or any of the three kids commented positively or negatively. In my book, that means I'll keep looking for another Chicken Parm recipe until I find the one with the "wow" factor.

Sweet, Sticky and Spicy Chicken

Reviewed: Apr. 17, 2009
I try lots of new recipes and this is the best one I've tried in a long time. It scored a huge homerun with hubby and all three kids (5, 8, 11). It is a rare feat to find something that everyone raves about. Just the right mix of sweet and spicy. So quick, simple and made with ingredients I always have on hand. I'll be making this over and over again. FYI: I doubled the sauce and dredged the chicken in flour, salt and pepper before frying. I cooked the chicken in two batches, cooked it until completely done, then added 1/2 of the sauce. It "stickied" up quickly and I didn't need to cook it the extra 8 minutes the recipe calls for. I think it might have burnt if I had done that. My 11-year old couldn't stop raving - "Mom, this is like the stuff you get at the Chinese restaurant only 10 times better!" Give this one a try! UPDATE: My kids asked for this a second time this week and I obliged! I tripled the sauce this time thinking I'd like some extra sauce to serve over rice. BIG MISTAKE - it thickened up too much and wasn't saucy enough to serve over rice. AND it also completely changed the taste and texture - the sauce was overwhelming and the chicken was "goopy" rather than "sticky" like the last time I made it. We were all disappointed with the way it turned out tonight. I will stick with the way I made it the first time.

Chocolate Chip Coffee Cake

Reviewed: Apr. 5, 2009
Not bad, but nothing spectacular. I took this to a church brunch and brought about 1/3 home. To be fair, there was plenty of food, but I was hoping people would love it so much, they'd go back for seconds. I also have to say I didn't have any problems eating the leftovers. :) Again, not bad - just not the wow factor I was hoping for.

Dee's Roast Pork for Tacos

Reviewed: Mar. 7, 2009
So easy, so tasty and so tender! While cleaning out the freezer I discovered all sorts of pork - bone-in pork chops, boneless chops,a 3lb boneless tenderloin... Whatever possessed me to buy so much pork I don't know. I never have good luck getting pork tender or flavorful, so I rarely cook it - one look in the freezer and you'll agree. Anyway, I grabbed a pack of the boneless chops and the pork tenderloin, threw it all in a glass baking dish, doubled the rub mixture, covered with foil and went shopping (hubby was home). I baked at 350 for about 3 hours. Didn't need to cook any longer as the meat was shredding itself. Obviously, the cooking time will vary based on the type of meat used. Anyway, I finally got flavorful, tender pork! The kids even ate it! Will definitely make this again to use up the rest of the pork in the freezer.

Valentine Heart Necklaces

Reviewed: Feb. 17, 2009
Very good! This was a very nice change from our traditional sugar cookie recipe. We liked the subtle lemon flavor (I used fresh lemon peel). The texture was nice, too. I rolled them to about 1/4" and they stayed soft. We tinted the dough and icing pink and made some with icing and some without. We preferred the iced ones but the plain ones were delicious as well - and I can't say that about my traditional cut-out recipe as they are NOT good without icing. We will definitely make this one again. FYI: We didn't bother making them into necklaces, but we might try that sometime for a special treat. FYI: Chilled dough and it was very easy to work with which is a nice plus.
