I'm a newlywed of about five months, and my husband and I find ourselves pretty busy with him in law school and me working full time.
My favorite things to cook
As much as I wish my creativity (and occassionally crazy appetite) would lead me in the direction of having hundreds of delcious, fast and easy meals up my sleeves to pull out and wow my husband every night, my real talent and mad cravings lie in desserts. I love them and can't seem to get enough. I have trouble waiting for one to be finished before making the next. I need to work on that; I think my hubbie is becoming burned out on sugar!
My favorite family cooking traditions
My mother has always made a delicious Thanksgiving feast. I loved and looked forward to it every year. Now that I have my own family, I'm the one responsible for preparing the feast. I'm so glad I was able to help my mom out and learn how to make all those delicious things!
My cooking triumphs
When I moved out of my parents' house and up to college, they moved 2500 miles across the country. Though I was able to fly to Michigan for Christmas, I was still left to fend for myself both for Thanksgiving and Easter. I managed to get invited to a friends house for Thanksgiving, but Easter I tackled on my own. I invited friends over, and made my very first turkey. I've heard it's the easiest thing to make, but I was so glad to have my dad on the phone to give me step by step instructions!
My cooking tragedies
A few months before my husband and I were married, I wanted to surprise him with some BBQ chicken I had found the recipe for on this website. I was so excited to make my own barbecue sauce and couldn't wait for him to get to my apartment to show him. The first taste I snagged was SO awful and bitter! I dumped everything I could think of into it, from brown sugar to applesauce. It turned out I had used white distilled vinegar instead of apple cider vinegar. My first time using vinegar, and the white was what my mom had left me when they moved. I had no idea there was a difference! We didn't eat the chicken, but he did say he'd never seen the kitchen sink drain so smoothly as it did after dumping the sauce down the disposal that night!
