I was raised with a Korean mother who is an excellent cook. Sadly, I didn't help cooking enough in the kitchen, and now I'm married trying to learn how. My husband and I are still experimenting with new recipies, trying to find what things we like and what we're good at. I'm graduating from Oral Roberts University with a degree in TESL(teaching English as a 2nd Language)and next year, my husband and I are going to the University of Colorado--my husband for his law degree, and myself for my Speech/Language Pathology degree. I love to study languages (Spanish, Korean, French, and English). On the weekends, my husband and I love to ski. Next year -- black diamonds!
My favorite things to cook
Korean, vietnamese spring rolls, mexican, desserts... anything that I can make without having to stand in the kitchen for an hour. I love my Tak Toritang(korean spicy chicken & potato) recipie because I only have to chop up a few vegetables and relax while it's simmering. I also like making a curry mixture that koreans eat. I used to work at a pizza parlor and learned how to toss pizzas and make strombolli.
My favorite family cooking traditions
On New Years, my family helps my mom make spring rolls, crab cheese wontons and rice cakes, which is an all-day event. We make enough to give to friends, take to partys, and have enough leftovers for a month. Also, during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter, my mom makes the best mashed potatos with her kitchenaid mixer. It whips the potatos to be so fluffy, then she'll throw a few dallops of sour cream and butter in for more flavor. It just melts when you slide it into your mouth!
My cooking triumphs
My favorite meal my mom ever made me was Tak Toritang, a korean spicy chicken and potato meal. It always hit the spot and when I went to college, I asked her for the recipie. I cook it for my husband now practically every week. We might as well set up a night to be "tak toritang" night. I have to throw in extra chicken now because he likes to snack on it the next day. I also found that I'm quite good at new recipies, I feel like I'm discovering that perhaps I'm really a natural at this.
My cooking tragedies
Not knowing all my mother's great recipies. Also, I always want to get straight to the food without having to take too much time to prepare it. I guess I've really been spoiled by my mom always having something good on the table at the right time. It's kind of like a workout mentality, I want the results without the work. This is my great downfall about cooking. Hopefully, I'll keep growing and learning new things to make it a lifestyle more than a chore.
