About this Cook
Working mom with one child at home. I like to cook from scratch - boxed foods really don't do it for me. I will occasionally buy shortcuts - pre-cooked chicken, stir-fry sauce, etc., but mostly fresh food every night. Edit 11/10/09: I've been a widow for a year-and-a-half and the children are all moved out - I've lost the joy of cooking... does anyone have suggestions for real meals for ONE person? I love a good glass of wine with my dinner :D
My favorite things to cook
EVERYTHING! I love trying new recipes, and will ususally try 2 or 3 new ones each week. I like Latino flavors, and will usually pick those recipes over anything else.
My favorite family cooking traditions
The only real cooking tradition in my family is the braunschweiger and cream cheese ball that's made for holiday gatherings - I love the leftovers on rye bread the next day! My dad also brought a couple of recipes back from his army days that are always a family favorite - SOS on toast and chop suey! I have started my own tradiiton, and always make pepparkakor at Christmastime.
My cooking triumphs
My first attempt at tamales was a HUGE hit with my family. They were a fancy shrimp and poblano pepper type that I got from the Epicurious website. So yummy!
My cooking tragedies
UGH! I just made a chicken breast recipe that called for tarragon, thyme and basil, dijon mustard and honey - it sounded soooo good! Everyone took one bite and I immediately knew it was NOT a "keeper"!

Porcupine Meatballs III
I misplaced my family's recipe for these - so of course I came here! This one was very close to what we've always made, with the exception of the mustard. I added some Worcestershire Sauce, about a teaspoon, and they were absolutely yummy!

Chicken with Tomatillos and Poblanos
This was a very good dish - but very labor intensive. Will definitely make it again, but next time will make it on a weekend for sure!

Brazilian Chicken with Coconut Milk
This was wonderful! I used cilantro instead of the parsley, though. Next time I make it I'll cube the chicken instead of leaving the breasts whole. Made a double batch, froze the 2nd serving. First time I served it with brown rice, 2nd time was with whole wheat angel hair - was delicious both times. A definite keeper!
