About this Cook
I'm a 21 year old college student, almost at the end of my year studying abroad in Germany. Love learning new recipes, and this year has definitely good for that. :) Converting everything from cups - grams when exchanging recipes has been interesting. :)
My favorite things to cook
Cookies, "down home" recipes (this mostly started once I got over to Germany, and was a little homesick), and things that are from my childhood. Especially like making recipes that I can share!!
My favorite family cooking traditions
Um... most of my family doesn't really like to cook. They mostly have done it out of necessity. :) My favorite thing is something that my grandma and I started when I moved closer to her 1st year of college: every winter, we made christmas cookies together, caramels and in the spring caramel corn. I love baking with Grandma-- I learn so much from her.
My cooking triumphs
Successfully pulling of an "international" Thanksgiving, making "American pie" (Apple Pie) for family near Stuttgart. Finally getting to the point where I have the confidence to cook stuff without recipes.
My cooking tragedies
A blueberry pie that was harder than a ROCK (at previously mentioned internat'l Thanksgiving). An attempt at a "tuna-thyme soup" in high school (what WAS I thinking?!)

Blackberry Apple Pie
I made this for a large family get-together. Used 6 Granny Smith apples on this (medium) and 600 g (about 3 pints) of blackberries -- but I had to bake it in a casserole dish (no pie pan). It turned out amazing. I added a little cinnamon, but other than that followed the recipe exactly. So delicious!! Not even any leftoever crumbs in the dish after my family got done with it.

Ruth's Grandma's Pie Crust
This was a GREAT pie crust recipe. Was visiting some family in Germany and they wanted "typical American apple pie", but you can't buy pie crusts in the store there-- so I attempted making it from scratch. This crust came out PERFECT and they LOVED it. We actually made a second apple/blackberry pie because they loved it so much. Thanks for a great recipe!

Holiday Chicken Salad
This recipe was had too much mayonnaise flavor for my family (which to be fair, none of us like mayonnaise much anyway). So I added about 8 oz of sour cream and doubled the paprika and added some extra pepper. Also added lots more veggies. It was even better the second day. YUM! Will definitely be making it again (with the sour cream). NOTE: we bought the Costco chicken salad the other day and I just got told that this recipe was better.
