About this Cook
I am a Junior at the university and have been trying to cook since I was about eight years old. I am a lover and a writer and a painter - I love trying colorful things and consider myself just breaking into professional-level cookery.
My favorite things to cook
fish, Indian food, Mexican food, desserts - particularly pie. I've won awards.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Food that smell are our favorite foods to make. Ones that make the whole family wander into the kitchen smacking their lips asking what's for dinner.
My cooking triumphs
Trout - we caught three trout one Saturday and went home to figure out some way to spruce it up. After they were cleaned and gutted, I mixed up a superb tapenade of oil-soaked sundried tomatoes/fresh basil/feta cheese/fresh roasted garlic. It was last-minute, but so exquisite we talked about it for days.
My cooking tragedies
Salt cookies. I have ruined many a dish, but the one that sticks out the most are those salt cookies.

Balsamic-Glazed Salmon Fillets
This recipe is tangy, zippy, and gives the salmon a rich and moist texture. I didn't have fresh oregano so I crushed some dried bay leaves on the top - still that tangy Mediterranean taste. I also didn't have any wine (under 21), so I opted for white vinegar and it worked fine. I added a little extra honey to compensate. This seems like it would work as a marinade for any meat. I want to try it with lamb. Nummy.

Truck-Stop Buttermilk Pancakes
My first attempt making pancakes from scratch - the flavor was just what I imagined pancakes should taste like. The next time I made these I added about 3T cocoa powder and some powdered sugar to taste. After pouring out each pancake, I sprinkled the wet side with nutmeg and cinnamon. They were absolutely stunning. I served them with real maple syrup and a few slices of pink lady apples to combat the richness. I was proclaimed a genius and everyone had at least four helpings.

Spintz Cake
This cake has a superb taste and texture. It is very rich, be sure to provide enough ice cream for your cake-eaters. Also, don't substitute this recipe for one cake mix. The cake stil tasted excellent and my sister ended up eating bits out of the garbage we'd had to scrape off the sides of the pan and off the inside of the oven. We have affectionately called this 'garbage cake' ever since.
