Cream Cheese Mania

I am ashamed to admit my fixation with cream cheese.  One would think that after having two babies virtually back to back I'd be steering clear of such evil things.
My cravings for this creamy delight far surpass the typical hankering.  I find myself checking the price of it everytime I go to the grocery store.  If it's even remotely a bargain I'm throwing half a dozen blocks into my cart.  I immediately begin to scroll through recipes in my mind giving myself an excuse to make something with my beloved cream cheese in it.
Aside from the obvious..cheesecakes, danish and bagels topped with various flavored cream cheese's, I also manage to work it into a variety of other edible creations.  There's the occassional dessert pizza, countless dips and spreads and my favorite, chicken enchiladas.  But worst of all is my secret "snack" consisting of cream cheese prepared straight up, with a pinch of sugar, chocolate chips and little swirl of raspberry preserves mixed in...eaten right of the bowl with a spoon.
Is this just the normal 'weakness' one might have for a specific food or have I crossed the line into addiction?  I'll tell you one thing for sure...I DON'T CARE!

Do you have a passion for cream cheese as well?  What is YOUR food mania?

Sopapilla Cheesecake
Chantal's New York Cheesecake (To die for, no joke.  Do not stray from the recipe, trust me.)
Jalapeno Popper Spread  (Add Panko on top, along with the parmesan and then bake in oven.)

Mine is just cheese- Yes, Cream Cheese, but even better-colby-cheddar-sharp medium or mild- to make it easier on me 9i don't like-brie or swiss. Yeah that was a lot easier. I will eat swiss if it is cooked or melted though, just not raw.

Your secret snack sounds great! I've always loved most cheeses, just lack the funds to indulge to my hearts desire. ha ha

Mmm, I love cream cheese too! It's rare that I don't have any on hand. I have made different cheesecakes, but the only one I really like to eat is Three Cities of Spain. I also like cream cheese pound cake, as well as rugelach (both recipes from AR). In non-desserts, I like to use a bit of it some cream pasta sauces for added richness, and I make something like jalapeno poppers too, but in phyllo.

I am finding this cream cheese entry pretty ironic right now! I tried to stay far away from cheese until I met my hubby. He LOVES cheese. To him, your typical boxed "shells & cheese" are deemed worthy until I've added an extra 1/2 block of Velveeta and turned it into some sort of "cheese'n noodle soup"! (I know! So unhealthy! I'm working on his cheese fetish...) Anywho, I too have recently been looking for an excuse to eat cream cheese! It's become a staple on the regular grocery list. I can't help it! Recently I've made a Spinach & Artichoke Dip from this site and also a chololate chip cheesecake from this site. Both were delish! I'm also excited to make the Jalapeno Popper Spread you mentioned for my hubby!

Ever try adding cream cheese to your favorite Chicken Pie recipe? Add 4 oz softened to your filling,It's YUMO!!!!!

Three Cities of Spain???? Now THAT sounds interesting! If by chance anyone can offer up a recipe I would be greatly appreciative! (And you can bet I'll add some to my Chicken Pie next time I make one...Great idea!!) This is precisely why I love cream cheese. One ingredient that can be used in so many ways...never a shortage of idea's and recipes! (And by the way, that Jalapeno Popper Spread is not only delicious, it's addictive!! Suggestion: Add Panko bread crumbs on top, along with the parmesan cheese then bake it in the oven instead of the microwave.)

Three Cities of Spain? I love the title, DetectiveL! And I love cheesecake, too. My dad is a huge cheesecake fan, but also loves carrot cake (with cream cheese frosting, of course) so it's a toss-up for Easter dessert this year. I may have to flip a coin. On a side note, Angean, did you know that you can hyperlink the recipes you've mentioned in your blog, so we can click directly to them? Just highlight the recipe title, and click on the right-hand icon (the one with the globe and links in a chain); a box will pop up for you to paste the recipe URL. (You can only add hyperlinks to the main blog post, not the comments, unfortunately.) Great topic, by the way!

THANK YOU for the hyperlink instructions!! I went back and added them to each recipe.

I love all cheeses! My weakness is ALWAYS looking in the small basket of cheeses that have been cut into very small 1-2 oz pieces. Clever idea, as anyone can afford to taste a large variety of cheeses from around the world at only $1 or $2 a piece.

If you type "Three Cities of Spain cheesecake" into Google you should find some recipes (I checked; the first few are more or less the same). I got my copy from someone, on paper, and it's almost exactly like the ones online. I like this cheesecake because it's smooth and dense (compared to other cheesecakes, anyway). It's pretty simple, with just a sour cream topping. :)

A-HAH! From the name I was imagining a dessert made from cheeses that were the local specialties of three Spanish cities. Here's what Epicurious says: "No cheesecake roundup would be complete without this one, created by Santa Fe's Three Cities of Spain coffeehouse (which closed in the mid-1970s) and our absolute favorite in the creamy category." Great looking recipe--and very cool name. Thanks!

That is the EXACT recipe I found as well!! Looks good and I plan on making one this week.

I am a cream cheese lover as well. Although, I will not eat it plain. It has to be mixed with something...fruit, sugar, or in a cheesecake! I love it. Chicken enchiladas are one of my favorites too. But I just thought I'd share my food mania. Its shrimp. Not fried shrimp or shrimp cocktail tho. Grilled shrimp, shrimp scampi, shrimp in pasta, mongolian shrimp from my favorite chinese restaraunt, etc... I find myself always ordering shrimp when I'm out to eat! Its become an addiction. :]

Apr. 1, 2009 11:41 am
I LOVE cream cheese too! One of my favorite ways to use it is to mix it up with scallions, pepper, and garlic, and stuff it inside boneless chicken breasts (after I've "butterflied" them). I secure them with toothpicks, and roll them in crushed up cheez-it's (sounds strange, I know...but SOOOO tasty!). I then bake them at 400 degrees for 30 minutes, and they come out so delicious. My family loves it!

Yes, cream cheese is the BOMB, isn't it? I'm like all the others posters here....just love cheese in pretty much all forms. With cream cheese, I do try to keep it healthy and eat the Neufchatel 1/3 less fat kind which is actually pretty good. I did try the fat-free Philly kind once and about gagged....it had a texture and taste like Elmer's Glue. My favorite little snack incorporating cream cheese is this: freshly chopped green chile (roasted and peeled of course), mixed with a drizzle of olive oil, some minced garlic, sliced Roma tomatoes, all spread onto either a whole-wheat bagel or whole-wheat tortilla. Delicious!

You're all giving me no choice but to delve deeper into my cream cheese addiction with all the new suggestions! LOL They all sound utterly delicious!

I ADORE cream cheese! People always ask me why my cupcakes are so delicious... it's because I always use cream cheese buttercream!

I'm very fond of cream cheese rollups, which is basically cheeseball spread on a tortilla rolled and cut. mmmmmmm

Apr. 1, 2009 8:04 pm
Speaking of, there is a small Teriyaki place by my house that has bits of teriyaki chicken, cabbage and cream cheese rolled up then steamed in a whole wheat tortilla. You dip that into a sweet teriyaki sauce..it is to die for. Guess what I had for lunch today.

It doesn't seem nice to fan the flames of your cream cheese addiction, but I love it too. Some of my faves.... add some garlic (to taste) to the cc and spread atop pizza crust and sauce, then add shredded cheeese and toppings, or use the same mixture on top of your burger...MMMM

Apr. 1, 2009 8:59 pm
Oh! I also have a friend that adds cream cheese to her spaghetti sauce. I've never tried it but everyone that's been to her house for dinner says it's ah-mazing!

I adore cream cheese!!! I also adore Green olives. Take one box of cream cheese, add about half of a 10 oz jar of sliced green olives and half of the juice!!! Grab wavy chips and eat to your hearts desire. I can sit and eat it all by myself!!! I don't get a craving for salt very often, but when I do, I hog this down. It is a family holiday dip along with onion dip. Couldn't ask for better!! YES, it's salty, but creamy too. If I get a sweet tooth after all that salt ( which I normally do ) I take some cream cheese, add some strawberry jam, mix and spread on any cracker you want. I love Ritz crackers. It adds a buttery flavor. YUM!!!

Another recipe to sub cream cheese for is Sour Cream Pork Chops (on this site, a slow cooker recipe). Very good. And yes, I agree, Chantal's is to DIE FOR!

Luckily my appendix has been removed so I can enjoy all the cream cheese I want - if it weren't so bad for my diet. I think my favorite snack cheese is the "cow cheese" brand stuff that comes in a wheel. nom nom nom! Actually great timing on your post...I just bought some cream cheese to make icing for a carrot cake, but I got extra on accident. DARN! Going to HAVE to try the popper spread. Thanks!

oh, I love cream cheese too. Just yesterday I spread some on a slice of white bread and crushed up some walnuts, rolled it up and ate it. My daughter thought I lost my mind, but I was out of bagels and needed my cream cheese fix.Yummy!

As a kid my cousins and I would eat cream cheese with ruffled potato chips while watching old reruns on TV. I have fond memories of him and I arguing over the last chip and cheese. MMMMMmmmmm now I want some.

They do have cream cheese made out of Tofu-its by a company called Tofutti...I swear you can't tell the difference, especially if you cook it in something. I'm just saying, no saturated fat.....

i love ANY cheese....oh, and i bought a 4 pound brick of cream cheese today :o) (making a cheesecake sunday)

My fav. cream cheese recipe is....Take a jar of "Homemade Chili Sauce" (cute little round jar with a white lid, tiny white label...this is all it says! Buy it at Raley's or a store like that) mix it w/ 1/2 lb. salad shrimp (not canned) and dump it on top of the block of cheese...gobble with wheat thins. YUM!! The sweet sauce makes it a completely diff. dip than when made with salsa or cocktail sauce, BETTER! Can't wait to try that jap. popper spread! I wish I could make c.c. ragoon successfully. My cheese never turns out as fluffy as the chinese restaurants :o(

Cream cheese is the best. Being a southern cook, I use it in lots of things. Mix a 2 blocks of Cream Cheese and one package bacon together (cooked til crispy and crumbled). Then spread the mixture on bread and make finger sandwiches or spread on crackers. Yum! Also, I have a chili-cheese dip recipes that's amazine. Spread cream cheese on the bottom of a 9x13 dish. Pour one canned chili (beans or no beans) over that. Sprinkle a package of chili or taco seasoning over that. Then top it with cheddar cheese and bake at 350 until its bubbly. Serve with tortilla chips. Wonderful!

Love love love it too. Here's the thing no selling intended as a Tastefully Simple rep I have some fabulous dips always on hand at home to add to cream cheese and help cover my love for the block. Warm the oven savory cheese dip mix when thinned with milk in a skillet makes a fabulous sauce for pasta and chicken. If you have ever had this dip you know just how to die for it is. www.tastefullysimple.com/web/sstgeorge

I'm a long time cheese hound...I love my cream cheese spread on a saltine with a shake of plain salt on top. Don't tell anyone in my family but I've been known to dip cheddar slices in the sugar bowl.

I too have a cream cheese addiction! I am like queen of all cheesecakes..I always try to find an excuse to make one! Family events mainly but sometimes well just because! My husbands fave dish is made with penne, creamed spinach, sausage & cream cheese (of course)!! It is to die for! And my guilty little pleasure when I need my fix is a simple cheeseball recipe..I mix cream cheese, shredded cheddar cheese, worstershire sauce, green onions and spread on crackers..I can eat the whole block if I allow myself to!

Apr. 2, 2009 8:35 pm
I love cream cheese also!! I use it in everything! It is great in mashed potatoes. I also chunk it up in quiche. Put it on crackers...whatever! I love cheese in general, but cream cheese is so versatile!

Apr. 2, 2009 8:46 pm
Is there such a thing as a cream cheese layer cake? I would like something not as dense as a cream cheese pound cake- something like a cross between a cake and a cheesecake. (I figured if anyone would know, it would be a fellow cream cheese fanatic!) Thanks, Ellen

You create one, Ellen, and we will all try it :)

Cream Cheese is the yummiest thing on earth!! I believe it comes from Heaven, just like the Philadelphia commercial says!!! haha

You are not alone! I feel like there should be some sort of cream cheese eaters anonymous. I sneak around, telling ppl who "catch" me eating it that it's yogurt. My favorite way to snack is to let a block soften. Then a add a load of splenda, vanilla extract, and sometimes strawberry preserves. Mmmmmm....guess what I am eating now??

I love cream cheese in pretty much anything too! I love cream cheese wontons or crab rangoon from chinese restaurants, bacon wrapped jalapenos filled with cream cheese and grilled, fruit dip consisting of cream cheese and marshmallow cream, taco dip with cream cheese, sour cream and taco seasoning, whipped cream cheese frosting on top of carrot cake, and there is also a really good rhubarb cheesecake recipe on this site that I made once. It was delicious!

I can eat cream cheese on or in anything! My favorite quickie appetizer is an 8 oz. block of cream cheese with half a jar of jalapeno pepper jelly dumped on top. Pick your favorite crackers and snack away!

About Me
My favorite family cooking traditions
Now that I have a family of my own I am having a wonderful time creating cooking traditions. Christmas is my favorite! Every year we slow roast a prime rib for dinner. And for Thanksgiving it's, dare I say, ham! We're just not fond of turkey. I also love to bake with my toddlers. They love getting up on a chair and helping out!
My cooking triumphs
Learning how to bake. When I was on maternity leave with my first child I taught myself how to bake. It's was never a my strong point, now it's my favorite past time!
My cooking tragedies
Again...Learning how to bake! Getting to where I am now with baking was NOT pretty! :)
