Since I've become ill and can't work, I've used a lot of my new found free time to mostly bake, but also cook. I like to find old family recipes and try them out, and sometimes switching things around to mix it up a bit and give it a modern touch with things that maybe weren't available back in the old days.
My favorite things to cook
Cakes, cookies, dessert bars, fruity breads, lettuce salads, pasta salads, potato dishes, meat marinades and more.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My mom's the expert bread maker, I'm talking desserty/breakfasty sweet breads, she makes lasagna without following anything but her mind and it always turns out fabulous. My grandma, who was Finnish, had a Swedish meatball-type of recipe in a Finnish fashion, that I loved.
My cooking triumphs
I've developed good cookie making skills over time by sheer trial and error, am getting close to the same with cakes and breads, and hope to become good at pies next.
My cooking tragedies
Once I was making a treat that was a Heath Bar knock-off, I goofed and thought I'd line the pan with foil to make it easier to get out once it was baked. OOPS, the foil soaked into the liquid-y bottom layer and baked itself inside of the dessert which became hardened. Duh. It was the only thing I've ever had to throw entirely away, it was in no way salvagable.
