I turned 30 Dec. 07. I have been married to David since June 24 '00 after we dated for 6 years. I grew up with my grandma who I just lost June 21 '07, so now it's just me, David and our 4 cats, Tabby, Sammy, Lucy and Angel. I am currently a stay at home wife. I spend most of my time outside in the summer(or in during the winter!)talking with our neighbors I've known all my life or just cooking up a storm! I have been at least helping to cook and bake since I was about 8. I love to experiment with recipes or just make family tradition recipes handed down from each generation. I often take pieces of several recipes to make one of "my own". The recipes I get from here though I usually make as directed first to review it before I go messing with it. I have found some pretty good stuff on here though and hope to maybe make some new friends with the same intrest too!
My favorite things to cook
I love comfort foods and desserts and make these most often. My family is very Southern influenced from generations before, so we eat a lot of fried foods. Okra is one of my all-time favorites along with SOS, grits, cornbread, fried pickles, crawdads from the creek behind us, frog legs when we get them, and wild mushrooms from the fields. I'm getting hungry thinking about it all!:D
My favorite family cooking traditions
Peanut Brittle for Christmas and homemade beef and noodles for special occasions. My grandma taught me how to make these from the recipes that she and my great granny always used. My very favorite thing every year was helping grandma grease our tiny dinning room table and spread the peanut brittle over it. Now that she's gone that's something I really miss doing with her.
My cooking triumphs
It's nothing specific. My grandma just passed away in June '07 and I found out talking with our neighbors in the days following that she had been bragging to them about me over the past couple of years saying that I "had become quite the cook". As far as I'm concerned, my grandma and granny were the best cooks around, so to find out she'd said that about me made me very proud.(but then, I did learn from the best!)
My cooking tragedies
The first time I baked a cake with no help. I was 7, and it was my grandmas birthday. She loves poppyseed cake and I decided to make it for her. Unfortunately, I forgot the flour! It was hard as a rock! For fun we tried breaking it over a rock and the cake didn't even crack! Everyone always joked about that every year on her bday when I'd made her cake!
