I'm interested in local and organic food. I like to stay away from artificial sweeteners and HFCS as well as MSG. I'm more likely to buy "real" peanut butter for my kids rather than Skippy. I truely believe that organic/local produce/eggs and meat tastes better so I try to seek it out. I'm always trying to find ways to encourage my kids to eat better. I run a daycare out of my home so simple/healthful and great tasting food is a challenge for me to prepare for kids and my picky husband.
My favorite things to cook
Mexican, soup, italian local veggies and new things. sometimes I just have to wing it for lunches when I don't have much time.
My favorite family cooking traditions
We're still working on this one. We haven't setteled on one thing for a tradition besides steaks at midnight on New Year's Eve.
My cooking triumphs
Coming up with a way to get the kids to eat sweet potatoes and pumpkin... My sweet potato or pumpkin souffle, which other's think sounds gross but which the kids LOVE. Basically it's pumpkin pie filling without the crust cooked on the stove. I even omit the sweetened condensed milk and cut the sugar in half and they ask for it time after time. It's a great way to get them to eat their veggies, especially in winter.
My cooking tragedies
Our Thanksgiving turkey. We got a Heritage turkey from a local producer that was organically grown and free range. The directions I got online said to cook it at a higher temperature for a shorter amount of time, which we did...and ended up under cooking it. Luckily our friends are very forgiving and appreciated the fact that we tried to cook a heritage turkey in the first place :)
