Amish White Bread

Reviewed: Nov. 8, 2009
Very easy and tasty! With half the dough, I made rolls and they turned out well after 30 minutes in the oven. After 30 minutes, the loaf was still a bit doughy in the middle. But still a fairly easy dough to make, since I'm used to using a breadmaker.

Spooky Witches Fingers

Delicious and gross looking! Perfect for our Halloween potluck today! I didn't like the idea of pulling almonds off of my already baked cookies, so I took another reviewer's advice and used raspberry jam. I melted a small amount of it in a ramekin in the microwave, then brushed it on with a pastry brush. After attaching the slivered almonds, I baked the cookies. It worked out really well, I'll be making them for a party again tomorrow night!

Whipped Cream Cream Cheese Frosting

Reviewed: Oct. 29, 2009
This was relatively easy, not overly sweet, and it got pretty good reviews at work. I think I didn't beat the cream cheese and sugar enough to get it light and fluffy, and my version would never have held up for piping. But I believe it's possible. I never bother with a chilled bowl or beaters for whipped cream - just throw it in the food processor and let it do all the work. Be sure to stop before it separates into butter though =)

Butternut Squash Layer Cake

Reviewed: Oct. 29, 2009
I didn't have maple flavoring and don't really care for it anyways. I substituted 1/2 teaspoon each cinnamon and nutmeg. I had some trouble with the cake getting cooked through, so by the time it came out, I thought it was a bit dry. The frosting I used (from another recipe on this site) helped with the dryness. It was a pretty good cake with good flavor - even squash haters liked it (the texture is nothing like squash, it's cake!)

Butternut Squash Soup II

Reviewed: Oct. 12, 2009
The onion and carrot were a little overpowering. I skipped the celery because I didn't have any. I think next time, I'd cut back on the carrot, and I would sautee the onion to start - and probably less of that as well. The consistency was good.

Chicken with Lemon-Caper Sauce

Reviewed: Aug. 23, 2009
I agree with everyone here, too lemony. I added sugar to the leftover sauce and will see what it's like at lunch. The butter turned my sauce a weird brownish, unappetizing color. I had really hoped to duplicate Buca Di Beppo's lemon chicken, but I'll have to keep looking.

Annie's Fruit Salsa and Cinnamon Chips

Reviewed: Aug. 14, 2009
Delicious and very flexible. This time, I used Fuji apples, mango, peaches, blueberries, kiwi, watermelon and a homemade blueberry/cherry/rhubarb jam. I've made other variations in the past, and really....how can you go wrong with such tasty fruits? I made the cinnamon chips years ago and this time picked some up from Trader Joe's. I think I will go with Trader Joe's from now on - they're really good, and so much easier!!

Best White Icing Ever

Reviewed: Jul. 1, 2009
Easy recipe, very flexible. Took others' suggestions and substituted half the shortening with butter. Also added only 3 cups of powdered sugar, but I love sweet stuff so I think it probably would have been good with 4. Easy to tint and decorate with!

Best-Ever Chocolate Cake

Reviewed: Jul. 1, 2009
Great cake! Followed the directions exactly and then frosted with a white icing from this site. Don't be nervous if it smells like it's burning within the time specified, it's fine! I'll be keeping this recipe, it was very easy to do!

WAAAAY too much milk. Wasted a lot of ingredients by trying to make a larger batch. I won't make this again.

Glorious Sponge Cake

Reviewed: Jun. 26, 2009
Followed the recipe exactly. Cake stuck to the 'ungreased' pan (last time I'll make that mistake). It was more dense than I'd wanted, I was expecting a light, airy cake. I won't make this again.

Peach Pie the Old Fashioned Two Crust Way

Reviewed: Jun. 25, 2009
I made only half a pie in a small ceramic dish because I live alone. This recipe halved well, despite the requirement of one egg (I simply skipped sealing with the egg and it was fine). This was great, I'll make it again!

World's Best Potato Salad

Reviewed: Jun. 8, 2009
Only my second attempt at making potato salad, trying to mimic my mom's recipe. It wasn't spot on, but it was pretty good! The potatoes were cooked perfect at about 25 minutes. The dressing was creamy and flavorful. I'll make this again!

Old Fashioned Potato Salad

Reviewed: May 31, 2009
I followed the directions exactly and was quite disappointed. The potatoes were undercooked (but having followed the directions, they were 'firm but tender' when I cut them. Once it was all mixed, it was quite apparent that they were very undercooked). Sadly, the liquid from the pickle relish made it watery. And for my own taste, this was not nearly creamy enough. That's just a personal preference though. I'll keep searching for a recipe to mimic my late mother's potato salad.

Best Lemonade Ever

Reviewed: May 30, 2009
Easy and delicious. I used my potato ricer to juice the lemons and only needed to use 5 of them. Adopting a childhood tradition, I also sliced up an orange (gave it a little squeeze over the pitcher) and threw the entire thing in. Thanks for a great recipe!

French Bread Rolls to Die For

Reviewed: May 24, 2009
I made the dough in my bread machine, then shaped it into rolls for baking. I also put half of it in the fridge for another day, but the dough expanded and seeped out of the Press N Seal wrap it was stored in! The dough was a bit sticky, but some spray helped with that. I probably shouldn't have done it, but before baking, I brushed my rolls with butter. OH MAN was that ever good! I don't know what they'd taste like without it, but I doubt I'll ever find out!

Rhubarb Sauce II

Reviewed: May 21, 2009
I goofed it up and it still worked! I'm generally pretty good at reading directions, but I threw everything in the pot and then read them! It's ok, the rhubarb softened up and disintegrated as it was supposed to. I love almond, so I threw a bit of almond extract in there. Also, it makes it more appetizing if you throw a couple of drops of red food coloring in. Delicious!

Rhubarb Custard Pie IV

Reviewed: May 12, 2009
I cut this recipe in half and made in a large (14 ounce) ramekin. Because it was deep, I think it needed longer to cook because it was still runny after the time was up. Tasty though!

Southern Grilled Barbecued Ribs

Reviewed: Apr. 29, 2009
This was fabulous, and flexible. I didn't have any cider vinegar, so I substituted red wine vinegar with no problem. Also, I'm not a fan of spicy stuff, so I didn't have any hot sauce in the house. I did squeeze some honey into the bbq sauce. I made half the bbq sauce and it was plenty for 3 pounds of ribs. Because of my work schedule, I cooked as the recipe said for 45 minutes on 350, but I had to wait to put it on the grill. So I turned down the oven to 200 and left the ribs in there, covered for probably 1 /2 to 2 more hours. It worked fine. When this came off the grill it was sticky, chewy, crunchy on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside and absolutely NOT dried out! PERFECT!!
